As a new Eudora fan , I am interested to hear how other users read usenet
newsgroups. I used to use Outlook express to do mail and newsgroups. How can
these two be done using Eudora as the email client? TIA

By either continuing to use OE, or picking another news client.

Eudora does mail, not news.

See http://www.newsreaders.com/win/clients.html for a selection of Windows newsreaders.

You wouldn't want to use your car to cut the grass in front of your
house, would you?

Better get a _real_ newsreader (you can go to
<http://www.versiontracker.com> and search for "newsreader" or "usenet
news" and you'll get a list of several possibilities (freeware,
shareware and commercial things).

I use Eudora for mail, (it doesn't do newsgroups), and Forte's Free
Agent for newsgroups.

Hi,
Thank you for answering my question as I had hoped for. To the others who
responded- I obviously am aware that Eudora is only a mail package and not a
news client.

By the way does Freeagent allow you to post but not receive ?

Thanks

YMMV, of course.

Whether or not you use Eudora is immaterial to which News client you use.
The two are separate things. X-News, Gravity and Agent are the three
people seem to commonly like.

Correct. However, the paid for Agent (not FreeAgent) does both.

Sorry, that is not my experience. No News reader would be any use if
that was the case.
Both the Free and the paid for Agent will read and post news.
There are exceptions but they have to do with your ISP. At the moment
Bigpond is in trouble with the rest of the world - they are banned for
not acting against spammers - that is a pain. I have found a way to
get around that - but then that is my secret.

In some parts of the world, local calls and/or Internet usage are
metered. In other parts they are flat rate and people are online all
the time, even when snoozing, showering, etc.

So for the latter category, there is not much need for an offline
reader. While it would be nice for each program to offer a choice, it
is not a trivial option to offer from the programming point of view.

It's a free download, give it a try.

Just a quick thought. I used Agent (paid version) for a number of years,
and then abandoned it in favour of XNews for one reason - it does not
easily handle multiple news servers. This might not be an issue for
everyone, but I needed to access three different servers, and Xnews makes
it soooooooo simple. I believe Agent can do it, but with a seperate ini
file for each server, or something like that. As I said, it might not be
an issue for you, but I haven't seen anyone mention it, so thought I
would. Hope this is helpful.

Hi Borge

I was talking about mail, not news. You're right, of course, no
newsreader would be particularly good if it didn't do news.

I've just checked again and FreeAgent does not receive mail, although
you can send it from the prog.
