I'm currently running Windows 95 and an Internet Suite by Delrina called
Cyberjack. Unfortunately, Cyberjack doesn't come with an Email client (You have
to use MS-Exchange which has failed to impress me.)
I'm also not too impressed with a Cyberjack News Reader...I much preferred the
format of the Internet in Box 2.0 for Win 3.1 news reader.
So....I am thinking of purchasing an email and news reader client. My dilemma is
that the News Reader(Forte Agent) I'm considering also comes with an email
client. So I wonder if it would still be worthwhile buying Eudora Pro in
addition.
Has anyone tried Forte Free Agent as well as Eudora Pro and got any opinions. Is
the Eudora Pro functionality far superior?

I use Free Agent and Eudora Pro. Agent does not replace a good e-mail program.
It's great to read news with.
I use them both and couldn't lose Eudora.

Eudora rules Forte's agent is not nearly as good

Its really easy to dis Agent when you are using the free version isn't it? I am
using verion 99e of agent and have paid for the complete version when it's
released. I have used agent in all it's forms since 9/95 and can say from
experience that it is a more than viable alternative to eudora or pegasus and
light years better than free agent.
Hey you talkin' to me?

Well, I haven't tried Forte's Agent as of yet, but I can't imagine how a
multipurpose program is going to beat Eudora's dedicated program.
Just because you can hammer a nail with a screwdriver doesn't mean that it's the
right tool for the job.

anything else that's handy because they can't remember where they put the hammer
the last time they used it to drive a screw.)

I'm using Free Agent right now. The mail functionality is limited to
sending, as it was designed for replying to posts. There is no mail
reader in Free Agent.
Free Agent is a good newsreader, although lacking in some
functionality, but its a poor mail client.
I'm using Eudora Pro for mail, and I'm very happy with it.

This free agent program have the ability to download and display
jpg's, gif's etc? How is it as a news reader? Is it that much better
than the shitty netscape reader?

Yes

I have been using Free Agent as my news reader for a couple of days.
So far I like it. Sure is better than netscape. Saves me lots of
online time.

I just bought agent .99e and am really pleased with the news
functionality. However, I probably won't even bother with the mail
until it supports MIME. So far, it only appears to support uuencoding
which I have little use for except for news.(a message from the
development team says "Coming Soon: MIME support") I really have no
problem with using eudora light. In fact, I think it's one of the
slickest programs on the net. Why do we need to use one program for
everything?
regards,

If you are going to apply the same standard... compare Agent to Eudora Pro. Don't
compare your paid for version of Agent against the free version of Eudora. Eudora Pro
has many enhancements over the free version. According to InfoWorld, Eudora Pro is the
best SMTP mail client. I got Eudora Pro for $49.00. For most people, the free version
works fine though.

One thing that is really bugging me is the fatware syndrome. Both
Netscape and Agent is trying to be all thing to all people. (This is
especially true with Netscape which has is a browser, a mail client
and a news client.)
However, what I really want is the best of breeds. Running the latest
version of Netscape, Agent and Eudora Pro concurrently is really a
waste of system resources. Hence I am still running Netscape 1.22,
Free Agent and Eudora Pro.
Can anyone comment on the mail functionality of Agent 0.99e. Is it as
good as Eudora Pro 2.2?

Go get Free Agent and try it. It is designed to be a news reader; mail
is secondary.E-mail (2-way) is an upcoming feature, according to
Forte. Does downloads of binaries (even multi-part) easily, has
off-line capability if connect time/cost is a problem, and handles
searches well. Better than Netscape by a mile.

As a PC newsreader Agent .99e shines, and used as an offline reader is
the best thing around if you have to pay for your online or phone
time. I don't think Agent is trying to be all things; mail, at least
sending mail, is just a natural part of reading news. So much so that
they even inlcuded it in their free version; Free Agent. This allows
people to take discussions off-line and many, with poor news service,
request a copy of posts via email.
Receiving mail is another matter and this is not supported by Free
Agent. Whether or not one likes mail (Send and Receive) in Agent .99e
depends on their mail sophistication and need. Some like it just
because it works the same way they read news.
It has a nice address book with nicknames and will soon be able to
handle MIME.
However it does not have:
Labels, status indicators (for sent, replied, etc.,) priorities, or
return receipts. With the exception of the indicators, most people
don't use these features much, if at all.
Agents biggest failing for me is an inability to do global searches on
mail text. This will probably be added as there is a constant request
for this from the news users.
Agent .99e has folders, but it will be sometime before it has nested
folders.
Agent is a threat to Eudora, not on a feature by feature basis, but
because many news readers will decide that it is good enough.
