Group: Using 7.1.0.9; all of a sudden I've noticed I cannot get a
sound when emptying Trash! "Getting Attention" still shows"Play a
Sound" is checked, and I do get a sound when new mail is downloaded,
but not when emptying Trash...have unchecked, then re-checked, to no
avail..

I'm using Win 7 32-bit...

I know this one is trivial, but still annoying; any suggestions would
be welcome...!

I'm not sure I *ever* got a trash-emptying sound!

I've noted that once in awhile, my Eudora exhibits some laziness, such
as no printer connection; graphics display, etc....doesn't happen with
me very often, though...at any rate, thanks for your responses...!

Could you remind us where to check and un-check the specific sound for emptying trash?

What does it happen to sound like?

If it sounds like when Windows' Recycle Bin is emptied,
then perhaps that's the sound which is disappearing and re-appearing,
rather than a Eudora-provided sound.

It so happens that all of my "Windows sounds" have taken a hike,
as of a few weeks ago, including any that Eudora tries to play
for certain errors or messages -- I no longer get Windows' own
"Empty Recycle Bin" sound, nor Windows' startup/shutdown sounds, etc.,
even though each individual sound will play in my
"Sounds and Audio Devices" control panel, which is set
to play "Windows Default" sounds, and even though all
audio and video players still play with normal sound.

It's of course more peaceful and quiet without those sounds,
but has anyone an idea of why Windows' sounds have all here fallen silent?

John:

There is no specific sound to be selected/deselected, but for me, the
sound Eudora plays on emptying trash is a single moderately pitched
note...and I do think it's a Windows sound that Eudora has borrowed
somehow...I'll check to see if the Empty Recycle Bin is the same note,
when the opportunity comes up, and report back.

I've absolutely NO idea why you've lost your Windows sound enabling;
hope someone else can help you with this...Hey, wait, didn't you state
once that you still use Win XP?

Might be an audio setting you're not looking for. Took me weeks to
figure out why I couldn't get audio on any Comedy Central video
clips.Turns out my Realtek "Mixer" had something checked "Mute". Soon
as I unmuted it everything worked.

Thanks, but as I said, I have plenty of sound when I use a media player,
watch a video, etc. The things I specifically don't have are the
_Windows sounds_ (just those special noises which Windows itself
is responsible for producing), including when any program
asks Windows to make any of those sounds.

Here are some of those sounds, arranged as a clever musical composition,
followed by some of the individual sounds -- this plays fine
from my browser, because the sound track comes from the video,
not from calls to whatever asks Windows itself to make the sounds:

More like that:

A symphony of Microsoft Windows versions rarely ever seen or heard:

One genuine item new to me, from the last video above:

As with tax breaks and other "sweetheart" legislation,
it's available only to corporate customers :)

When I use sounds from other than Eudora itself, I copy the file into
my Eudora setup... otherwise you're right, "updates" can ruin your
sound ;-)

I love to cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Perhaps your computer is getting a bit like me, somewhat forgetful,
but for me my rather advanced age should be an excuse though.

On my computers I have turned off the entire collection of system
sounds which I find very annoying, but as you seem to like them this
is what I suggest:

Have you tried refreshing the information in your registry by
selecting "No Sounds" in your "Sound Scheme", restarting your computer
and turning "Windows Default" back on?

That sounds like a plan!

It's not that I "like" them, just that on rare occasions,
like the time I bumped into another car in a parking lot,
one needs to hear the "bump" to know when to stop :)

Don't forget to fiddle with those plants
and shoot poachers, or whatever :)

Fiddlehead season went very well.

It seems that I have run out of poachers and, by the way, after I
shot those of the previous years, I just composted them since I am an
organic gardener ;)
