Everything works but mailboxes not visible.

I'm in trouble.

1) Eudora 7 was runing fine for years on my Acer netbook running XP,
including this past Sunday morning. Not at all sure what changed,
but now Eudora will do everything afaic, all the buttons and processes
work, except I can't open any of the mailboxes!!!

Clicking on In makes the virtual button go down and it stays down
until I release the left mouse key, but nothing happens after that,
not even a blink. When the cursor hovers over the button, I can see
in the status bar what the button does.

Going to the dropdown mailbox list doesn't help, even though all my
boxes are there, and Ctrl-0 and -1 don't do anything either!!

But I can see in the Filter Report all the emails downloaded, and I
can look in file manager and see t hat all the mbx files and toc files
have updated at the date and time that I see emails in the filter
report.

The only attribute of every file is "a". and the data files are all in
the same place.

Have you even heard of this before?


This coincides with a message that I have to have IE greater than v.3
to use the MS viewer. I have IE8.

A few other curiosities at the same time but I can't think of them
now, and I want to post this. Let me know if they matter.

It was working for the first couple days of this trip, and maybe for 4
years prior, but now when I remove it, Eudora mailboxes can be seen,
and when I insert it, they can't. I just didnt' expect this because
i've never had a file go bad before, except the one on a smart phone
once.

See if you can find another, same-versioned DLL and do a binary file-compare
(DOS: FC /b). If there are *no* changes than either the other file is also
bad (rinse and repeat, check a third file for good measure), or something
else is going on. (if you have a backup, or better yet: the origional
install package you could extract and compare with that known-to-be-good
DLL)

Ofcourse, its possible that some other component/DLL has been updated
(installed anything else recently ?) with which that viewer32.dll isn't
compatible anymore.

And there is a (tiny) chance that the DLL has been made time-limited
(forcing you to upgrade to a later -- always thought better -- version) ...

Can I take it from the fact that you have a "Program Files (x86)"
directory (folder) that you're using a 64-bit OS (probably Windows 7 or
later)?

I don't know if that makes any difference, but I assume (since Micky
posted his original to the Eudora and XP 'groups) that he's using XP-32
(as am I, but I don't have Eudora on this machine so can't check).

Viewer.dll should be in the plugins subdirectory of Eudora's Data
directory. The file doesn't come with Eudora, but is the dll for
Brana Bujenovice's Message-File Viewer (formerly known as Greek
Message Viewer).
The plug-in is used primarily to make received messages that use UTF-8
character encoding readable. Eudora itself is not capable of doing it.

I did a second install of Eudora with a different place for program
and data files from the first install.

Then Eudora would show the in an d out box. Theyh were empty but they
still showed.

Then I started copying data files from my real installation of Eudora
to the test one. First in, out, trash, and junk. Then about half of
the others, and then the other half. then I started in on the other
files, copying them from the desired but not working right instance to
the new instance. When I broke it, I deleted some of the recenly
installed.

Viewer32.dll comes with Brana's Greek Viewer, so it's installed
int he plugins.

I don't know about him, but unless the installation gives no choice I
put all my program files in C:\programs, and all my data in C:\data..
I'm not good at typing parenttheses, and if one uses spaces, he had to
put file names in quotes when using DOS or CMD.

Right. I thought there might be an XP aspect to this, and I suppose
there is, but it so deep in the weeds that none of us will ever know
it.

Before I left on my trip, I copied every file I thought I woudl need
to a flash drive, and I copied the flash drive to another flash drive.
And I put one in my suitcase and the other in muy compuiter bag.

Of course I shoudl have then copied all that to the XP laptop but I
waited until the plane landed. But it worked for several days so
that means the good version is on the flash drive.

It won't be the same because everything worked for a few days.

Or I could dl from Brana again, but since I know which file it is, and
since I like your suggestion of running FC, I'll probably copy from
the flashdrive. There is no rush. I don't get many emails that don't
use the Latin Alphabet , and if I do get one, I can fix it then.

Like I say, it worked for the first several days. The only other
file I know that has gotten messed up happened when I dropped a cell
phone. It has some sort of AT&T logo that came on the screen first
-- I can't remember whnat -- but after I dropped it, there is an
orange background and large green and yellow rectangles, with no other
detail, in place of the logo (which might even have been animated --
someone must have an ATT phone who can tell me what it looks like). I
may be wrong about which is the background color and what is the 3rd
color. But everything else about the phone worked fine (well, it had
very small RAM do it didnt' work fine, but it didn 't work worse after
I dropped it. I got a better phone, but that one would keep it's
charge for months when off. . .

Speaking of witch, anything related to the Message-File Viewer you guys

Just to clear it's name, offending application is not Message-File Viewer
aka Greek Message Viewer (viewer.dll), it's a different plug-in
(presumably) with similar name (viewer32.dll).

For version 3 I kept the old generic file-name (viewer), that may be
changed to MFV.dll, so we avoid confusion with other viewers (such as this
one), and to reflect it's renewed purpose.

FYI Version 3.2 will support Outlook Office Message files (msg). These
appear every now and than as attachments and what not, will come in handy.
No Office installation required BTW.

This small app survives against all the odds year after year, you made it
possible - thank you!

when the version was 3.2. Very strange since I don't remember
renaming it, and I normally wouldn't bother to save old versions when
the author has come out with something newer, and when I had no reason
to think I'd ever need the earlier version. And without checking the
flashdrive, I don't ecven know which version was on it`and which was
alr eady on the laptop

But apparently it was two versions of the same dll that caused the
problem, even tholugh one had another file name. I didn't know that
could happen. (My eyes are watering too much for me to know if I've
made typos.)

There is no version 3.2, the latest one is 3.1. If you are unsure of the
source, d/w it from here:

Perhaps you renamed it to indicate 32-bit. Note Eudora is 32-bit
application it can not load 64-bit version of viewer, or any other DLL.

There you go, that could cause problems. File names are irrelevant, plugin-
ids matter. 2 DLLs with the same Id - avoid.
So if you want to keep the old versions of DLLs inside the Plugins folder,
append to/rename their DLL extensions.

OldPlugin.dll.off -> Correct.
OldPlugin123.dll -> Avoid.

You're right. I got 32 from "32-bit". I think it was viewer23.dll,
but whatever it was it was a 2 digit suffix.

I''lll do it that way next t ime. BTW, eyes not watering so much
now. Went to the doctor and got an antibiotic, eyedrops and eye
ointment. I don't even know where I got sick but now typos are not
because of watering eyes but becasue i don't care.

Conjunctivitis (Pinkeye)

It has a specific smell, that you cannot miss.

It can be contacted in high-dust environments. It's very
simple. The tear duct clogs up, and the eye no longer
receives the "normal rinse cycle" it's used to. This make
it easier for an infection to take hold.

It can also be contacted by carelessness at an eye clinic.
Like, not cleaning the equipment properly after someone
who smells of Conjunctivitis has been in the room. The last
time I was at the clinic, there was a person there with
a pretty serious case of it. I knew exactly what it was,
I watched which treatment room they went into, you couldn't
have dragged me into that room when it was my turn :-)

Or, it could be contacted if you share optical instruments
(telescope, microscope) with someone who already has it.

If they smell funny, stay away from them :-)

Other people may not miss it but would I myself smell it. One's
ability to smell even the strongest smells, iiuc, goes away within 10
or 20 minutes.

Anyhow I smell noting and no one has said anything.

I got a glance at my eyes and they looked fine.

Haven't been to an eye clinic. The closest is today, when already
sick

Well, I did share cameras with someone, but neither hers nor mine had
a viewfinder (very bad when the sun is bright.)

Okay.

This morbning when I woke up my eyelids were stuck together from all
the crud.

And even two days ago, I was making enough sand to replenish Miami
Beach.

Just to be more clear, it definitely was the second dll that caused it
not to display mailboxes. They were a newer and older versions of the
same thing, one of them renamed. I should have changed .dll to other
than .dll. Next time I will.

Not sure if I had a lot of sand in my eyes or if the sand I had was
embedded in my cheeks and I couldn't scrape it out with my fingers like
normally. But the ointment or the eyedrops made that go away in a
couple days.

The plugged up ears, which I probably didn't mention, he gave me
oxomycillin (sp? No, I meant amoxycillin) for and it helped but it took
2, 3, maybe 4 more weeks after the 10 days of the prescription expired
before my hearing was normal in both ears. I was tempted to go to
another doctor, but my brother, a radiologist 77 years old, who seems to
me surprisingly current on other areas of medicine (considering there is
new reading to do on radiology alone, said to wait. He has to take an
online test in radiology every couple years to stay certified, and I'm
sure it's not like my computer certifications tests where everything I
needed to know I could pick up just by going to work. So how he manages
other areas I don't know, because some of the things he knows about
didin't even exist in 1969 when he completed his internship, the last
time I think he had formal training in anything but radiology.) But he
was right. My hearing cleared up finally.
