When I receive My emails, Some of the images which should appear are
replaced with boxes with a small red "X" inside the box. I think these
images are embedded, not attachments.

I am using Eudora 7.1.0.9 running under Win XP.

TIA for any help

I occasionally see that also (same Eudora & Win levels).

Workaround is to hit reply. Most of the images will show OK in the
included quotation.

When an embedded image in a message is replaced by a placeholder
sporting a little red X in the left top corner it means that the
viewer of Microsoft's Internet Explorer cannot show the picture,
often because of a setting in the options of I.E.

In that case you can switch to Eudora's internal viewer by disabling
Microsoft's viewer in Tools > Options > Viewing Mail or, as Rich is
suggesting, you can hit Reply because in outgoing messages only
Eudora's internal viewer is used.

I did as you suggested but now I get shaded boxes with nothing in
them. Do I need to check the "Use separate settings from Internet
Explorer" box?

No, that setting has nothing to do with your problem.

The gray box is Eudora's internal viewer's way of showing that the
images cannot be displayed. The images may not be embedded as such in
the body of the messages but be links to downloadable pictures. If
those pictures are no longer available you will get the placeholders
instead.

You also have to enable Eudora to get images from the Internet by
checking that setting in Tools > Options > Display > Automatically
download html graphics.

In case you have a slow connection and the graphics are very big it
may take a while for them to appear.

That option was already enabled. Received a new email this morning
with 5 shaded boxes which should have contained images. This problem
only started recently and I hadn't changed any options in Eudora for
many months. I've been using 7.1.0.9 in paid moded for amy years with
hardly any problems but this problem is driving me nuts!!!

Maybe I should re-install Eudora and copy my inbox, outbox, address
book, attachments folder & embedded folder to the new installation. Do
you think that might work?

I have a fast connection so that isn;t a problem. Most attachments
come through unscathed. It just seems to be embedded graphics which
are problematical.

To see if it is a display problem in Eudora you should right-click in
the message and select "Send to browser". That will open the message
in your default browser. If there is still nothing you should check
the embedded folder to see if the graphics are there.

It is not very often that there is a problem with the application
files, but it doesn't hurt to reinstall/refresh the program. Just run
the installer on the same location. It will not touch your data. If
you have the old installer you can do just that, but if you use a
recently downloaded installer you should save xlib.dll which is needed
for the fast search feature and is no longer included.

As a last resort you can see if it is something in the settings by
holding down Ctrl + Shift while you select Tools > Options. That will
remove all settings in eudora.ini, just leaving your account
configurations.
That will also automatically make a backup of eudora.ini so you can
always undo the changes.

My apologies. I accidently deleted your reply to my last enquiry after
I had printed it. I have retrieved the text from my deleted messages
folder and quote the relevant parts here.

I did this suggestion and the browser showed all rthe images
correctly. Does that mean that the graphics are not in my embedded
folder? There are 14334 graphics files in the folder. How can I find
the ones I am missing in my emails? It will take days of looking at
images even if I know the picture I am looking for.

If I run the installer, won't it instal new in,out, nickname files and
wipe out all the attachments and embodied files? My original installer
is years old [ if I can find it :-) ]

I've done that now but the problem still exists.

I awat your reply whther I should do a re-install.

Many thnks for your taking the time to help me

Wow.. tried that and it turned into a scary mess. Auto DHG has always
been enabled, while at the same time, Use MS to view has always been
checked.

Trying to uncheck 'Use MS' pretty much ruins the functionality.
