I am using Eudora 7.1.0.9 under Windows XP (with all updates applied)
after switching from Eudora Pro 3.0.5. FWIW, I am not using the
Microsoft Viewer option.

There is one aggravating feature that I have not figured out yet.
Perhaps someone here can help.

When replying to an email, I see each line of text preceded by the
excerpt bar. When I post my reply (bcc: myself) and examine it in
Eudora, I see neither the excerpt bar nor the default ReplyPrefix.

The eudora.ini settings site

lists the default value for ReplyPrefix as ">". I have tried adding
the line "ReplyPrefix=>" to my eudora.ini file but the result in the
same.

This makes posting to email discussion groups painful!

Is there a way to regain the old-style, he-said, she-said stacked >,
>>, >>>, etc.?

What am I missing?

What is format=flowed? (Windows)
Document ID: 1626HQ

ISSUE:

What happened to the old style ">" that used to appear when I replied to
a message? What is format flowed?

SOLUTION:

Eudora 4.2 implements a new Internet standard for sending text,
format=flowed. This new standard lets you send text with returns only at
the ends of paragraphs, which is much more convenient for reading on
small or unconventional displays, as well as being easier to handle when
quoting, trimming, etc. However, unlike styled text (eg, enriched or
html), format=flowed is not unpleasant for users with simple mailers.

The way format=flowed works is by sending your mail wrapped and with
normal quote characters (>'s), just like before. The only difference is
that whenever Eudora wraps your text, it adds a single space to the end
of the line. This allows Eudora (or other smart mailer) to reconstruct
the original text exactly, taking out all the line breaks that were
added, and presenting legible mail to the reader, no matter how wide or
narrow the window is. A simple mailer won't know how to do this, of
course, but that's ok; the only difference will be a single space added
on the end of each wrapped line, which will disturb no one.

For a full description of the format=flowed standard, please read RFC
2646.

Along with format=flowed comes increased use of excerpt bars in Eudora.
The reason we use excerpt bars with format=flowed text is that the text
rewraps itself "on the fly" to your window width, and inserting and
removing '>' characters would be very slow and clumsy in such a dynamic
environment. When your mail is sent, your mail is wrapped and the
excerpt bars are converted back into '>' characters for transmission, so
that even if your recipient has a simple mailer, your mail will look
fine.

If, for some reason, you do not want to use format flowed and the
excerpt bars, you can turn if off. Copy and paste the text below into a
new message in Eudora

<x-eudora-option:AlwaysExcerptResponse=0>

<x-eudora-option:ConvertFormatFlowedtoExcerpt=1>

The text you paste will show up in blue as a URL. Hold down the ALT key
and click on it - a window will appear asking you to click OK. Click OK.

No matter what different character(s) I have ever specified
(such as a vertical bar "|", or two characters "> ")
Eudora has always ignored me, and used one single ">" no matter what;
has "ReplyPrefix=xx" ever had any effect for anyone?

As to the other sugestions proposed, for suppressing "excerpt bars,"
whether by Qualcomm or otherwise,
none has ever worked consistently for me. In particular,
very long lines quoted by "except bars" end up sent as one very long line,
preceded by one ">" -- the long line "wraps" upon receipt by others,
but there's still only one ">" on the very first of many lines
when I later see it.

Windows' "Copy" (to clipboard) and "Save as" (to file) operations
also never convert "excerpt bars" to prefix characters for me
(there remains no trace at all of any original "excerpt" indication);
I would personally like to eliminate all "excerpt bars"
and have the prefix characters only, but I can't get them.

An editing feature to convert "excerpt bars" to real prefixes
would have been very valuable -- did anyone ever make a plug-in
to do that? Or to re-wrap only what _follows_ any "excerpt prefixes"?

Word-wrapping is no doubt a very desired feature to some,
but when I compose, I pay great attention to how lines "scan,"
and I "break" my lines where breaks belong,
not leaving some "space-filling" robot that can't read
to decide for itself where to wrap my lines.

"Format-flowed" completely wrecks that,
just as it does for poetry,
and I would personally like to kick it
into the bit-bucket at the end of the universe,
if only I could :)

Thanks, Ajo.

Strangely enough, after making those two changes to eudora.ini, the
recommended fix works on some emails and not for others ?

I'll have to investigate further ... which senders? which mail
clients? etc. ... to locate the cause.

Thanks for your insight, John.

The inconsistency that I am seeing seems to be related to specific
senders ... replying to email from gmail.com seems to be problematic
(the excerpt bars persist despite making the changes suggested by
Ajo).

Word-wrapping has proved particularly useful to me in the past
especially when clear-signing text messages with PGP.

It *may* not work when there is html in the message and then you have
to remove the formatting first.

Note also that it will no longer be possible to only quote the
highlighted text when replying.

Personally I find the combination of format=flowed and the excerpt bar
one of the nicest features of Eudora, which makes replying to a message
much easier. Recipients with email clients that are not supporting the
feature will just see the old-fashioned default ">" quote markers, or
whatever you have substituted for those, including nothing at all.

Have you succeeded in getting a different text character
(say a vertical bar "|") or a character string (say "> ")
to be substituted for the single ">"?

Can you tell me how you got it to actually work? Thanks.

I *thought* I had this working not too long ago while experimenting with
several settings, but I may be mistaken. My replies were some boiler
plate. Sorry.

All I can manage now is eliminating *any* prefix by leaving the New
Value field blank.

I think I was able to replace the excerpt bar by the old style quote
marks, but even that doesn't work any more. Some other setting must
interfere with it, something not very obvious as also happens for
example when not being able to open an attachment in an outgoing message
when "Allow editing of from and attach headers" is enabled in Sending
mail+, or when a blank icon appears at the left in the main Eudora title
bar when the system tray options are disabled in Display.

Try:
I agree that the value of the greater than symbol seems to be
fixed and not able to be changed, but to get it instead of the
excerpt bars try these 4 settings.

More than likely what you are seeing from "some"
senders is regular HTML mail, which has those excerpt bars.

Thanks, Daniel. I tried the first 3 settings and that didn't work, but
even with the 4th one added it's still no dice. I'll try to find a
backup from some time ago when I think it was working and see if an
older eudora.ini makes a difference.
For you it works with a post 4.3.2 version, right?

Others recommend an opposite approach,
although what is fundamentally required
is simply to avoid collision
between the email program's word-wrapping
and PGP's word-wrapping when sending,
and then between the sent message
and any recipient's client wrapping it again:

"It is better to have PGP word-wrap your messages
instead of letting your mail program do it,
because if your mail program wraps the text
after PGP has signed or encrypted it,
then it may not be possible to decrypt or verify the resulting message.
Therefore, you should also turn off the word wrap in the configuration
parameters for your mail program. (In Eudora this is done through
Tools -> Options -> Sending Mail -> Word wrap.)"
http://www.ephesus.com/Encryption/PGP-Steps.html

http://www.mccune.cc/PGPpage2.htm#WordWrap
(search for "wrap" throughout this page for more info)

Another thought is to sign any text in-line, then send using "Quoted-printable"
(which reconstructs long lines after temporary wrapping during transmission);
I haven't yet given this idea a try, however.

That seems in accord with the fact that

Thanks for finding that info.

<snip>

It has been a while and I have been working on it every now and then,
but still not much success. It's not that I wanted to change to the
old-style quoting, but it was just a case of curiosity.

I have experimented by using all your settings and by using an
eudora.ini from a 5-year old backup when, I'm sure, I had no problem
turning off the excerpt bar. I selected several mailboxes containing
messages with absolutely no html, even used "clear formatting" on them,
tried replying and it worked only once, for a single message only. Go
figure. I suspect that something else on my computer is interfering and
I have no idea what it is.
Anyway, thanks for the help.
