Comcast Discontinues Customers' USENET Service
Posted by CmdrTaco on Monday September 22, @08:35AM
An anonymous reader writes "Comcast has discontinued its provided
usenet service, once provided to all its high speed customers. First
with the cap put on its customers several years ago on amount of
traffic provided as part of the customer high-speed package, as of
September 16, the service is no longer provided. Without fanfare, this
bastion of the internet is being removed from the mainstream." <<<
I've been using Free Agent newsreader for over a decade to do all my
Usenet stuff. All my files, sends, and everything else NG-related is
in here. Any suggestions on how to keep getting this group using the
same program?

Check out APN from Forte (Agent developer)... $2.95/month.

I love to cook with wine Sometimes I even put it in the food
A few months ago, Verizon cut back on the available usenet groups.
They only allowed access to the "Big 8". I am using nntp.aoie.org as
my usenet server. I have over 54000 usenet groups and access is
totally free.

No, it's not Comcast that is killing usenet. It's people who post
off-topic that are "killing Usenet".
(Why was this posted to a Eudora ng?? Eudora doesn't even do ngs.)

I access it using Free Agent newsreader via newsgroups.comcast.net,
mkay? And the fact I may not be able to access this newsgroup anymore
is not off topic.

Found this on the web tonight:
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-9964895-38.html
88 offending newsgroups out of 100,000+. That's .00088%. Instead of
blocking the offenders they shut down the entire service. Talk about
overkill.

It's totally off-topic. Even if this were the Agent ng, it would
still be OT. (Unless you were asking about ng filters.)
Eudora doesn't do newsgroups. It's an e-mail program. Comcast
dropping usenet has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Eudora. With *your*
logic, it would've been okay to post your message *cough* rant to ANY
newsgroup, just because it IS a newsgroup. That's not how it
works.
The answer to your question is...
Get a subscription to a usenet provider. A few are free, most are
paid. You'll still use Agent to access them.
Now wasn't that easy? :-)

The child porn issue is a fig leaf, or an excuse, to limit cost and
increase the bottom line. No more, no less.

The AAjoie server didn't do anything for me just now. It timed out
waiting to download newsgroups. what is this a foreign news server or
something?
Yes, aioe is out of Italy. I was having problems with it over the
weekend. But now it seems to be working just fine. I never had a
problem with aioe timing out on me downloading anything. Just had
would not let me post this past weekend. Motzarella is good but you
don't get access to as many newsgroups and I have noticed that
downloading the messages is slower than with aioe.

The first connection to a new NNTP server
has to first download a huge amount of data
(a complete list of all newsgroups on that server);
it might be worth trying again.

It's good, it's free, it's anonymous,
and hopefully won't be overloaded
by those who could afford alternatives,
who really don't need what it provides
for those who otherwise could not have any access at all.
