Recently I have been getting the following message with all my gmail accounts accessed via Eudora. I have used Eudora for years with no problem. It is only in the last month or so this has started.

<Dominant>, logging into pop server. SSL Negotiation Failed. The connection with the server has been lost. Cause [5]

It only occurs when I first bring up Eudora, i.e. on Checking Mail. If I subsequently perform a File, Check Mail I have no problem. I either get a No Mail message or receive my emails should I have any.

For 'Secure Socket when Receiving' I have 'Required, Alternate Port'. I have tried all other SSL settings but I still get an error. I have tried turning off my anti-virus but still same problem.

Haven't updated any other Eudora settings. Cannot think of any other changes made to the system apart from Windows & anti-virus updates.

I have searched the Internet but cannot find anything else to try.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank-you.

No suggestions, but I am experiencing the same error message. If I
hit the "check mail" button again straight after clearing the error,
it checks the mail fine.

Are you using the Google POP server?

As a side issue, I use Eudora 7.1.0.9 to check mail accounts at my
ISP, at Yahoo and one at Gmail (their POP servers in each case).
Because I am in transition between this machine and a new box, all the
instances on the new box are still selected as "leave mail on server".
This is honored properly by all except Gmail.

Pedro, I am using Google POP server.

As to your other issue, I delete my mail from the server on download which works fine. However, there are settings in both Gmail (under POP settings) & Eudora (under Options, Incoming Mail)to leave mail on the server or not. Guess you need to set both.

Since about 10 days I have the same problem with Gmail.

The first connection aborts after 5 seconds. Then, without quitting
Eudora, the subsequent downloads have no problems. Server certificate
is "trusted".

Microsoft Windows Live Mail experiences the same problem.

There is nothing in Eudora that you van change. Gmail has to fix the
problem that they have recently created by whatever they changed.

Ajo, Thanks for your reply. That is my conclusion as well. Must be something has changed on the Google side. Surprised there haven't been more comments though.

Having Eudora on two PC's and wanting only one to clear messages off
the server means I can't set the keep-on-server flag at Gmail.
Suspect I need to pull the finger right out and finish this transition
to the new pooter.

I suppose that Google has multiple servers and that not all of them
are affected.

The first-attempt-fail and second-attempt-succeeds is extremely
repeatable. I couldn't see it being down to random server selection.

IMVSO one should not delete the mail from the server for one or two
days.

On one occasion years ago, using a version of Eudora, I dl'd my new
email and had time to open one of them and glance at it, and then right
before my eyes, all my new emails disappeared. They weren't in the
trash, and of course they were no longer on the server, because I had
the preferences set to delete mail once it was downloaded.

There were about 8 emails, few if any in those days truly spam, but
maybe just newsletters, mail lists, and advertising from vendors I
really cared about. Well, I don't know, because I didn't even glance
at the remaining subject lines. I was about to read the emails.

This never happened again and I don't know why it happened then, but it
did.

(Arnold, the above has similarities to your situation, which we may yet
solve. )

If you look at it logically, delivery to the user is not the right time
to delete email from the server. What does it matter if he has it if he
has not read it? The logical time is after he has read it. I don't
think Eudora or any reader offers that, so one or two days is the next
best thing.

I was thinking about the server where my account is residing.

I have now solved the problem by not directly checking the gmail
personality with Eudora and by configuring Gmail to forward all
incoming mail to one of my more reliable accounts.

I had the same problem, think I found the answer in this forum but don't know what post it was. But it was instructions on how to patch QCSSL.dll, now my Eudora is working great!! Here is the link to the page with the instructions:
http://www.cockle.us/download/Eudora/Eudora_QCSSL.htm

Good luck!!

PS The link on the page to download a patched file is dead, you have to patch it yourself.

Thank-you for this. This solution worked just fine.

I went in and accepted the new certificate and it worked.
You can do this under the Tools->Options->Checking Mail->
Then click Last SSL Info, then click Certificate manager
Select the failed Cert, and click Add to Trusted.

Eudora says I have never checked mail using an ssl connection and will not bring up a Certificate manager to click on. :-(

I was coming over to gmail from TWC account. This require SSL and there are some posts how to do that. -- Then when this first time error happens and I go through the same SSL enabling routine thare is always one relay that is marked with a scull - meaning it does not go through. This is: some California Mountain something.
