I need to move email files from and XP box to a new Vista box.

Where are the files located on the old box and where are the files to
be located on the new box.

Last time I switched computers it was a simple matter of copying some
files from "C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora" to "C:\Program Files
\Qualcomm\Eudora" and then installing the Eudora program.

I am unable to remember the details of this move. Can anyone help me?

Thanks, Fawzley

First of all one should NEVER store their data in an application's
install directory. Lot's of reasons that i won;t go into.

Start by choosing a directory for your email.
for example C:\users\<login>\Mail where C:\users\<login> is where
you store all of your data

Then put all your email in this directory. If you before had it
in your install directory you'll have to poke around and find it.

then start up Eudora pointing at your email directory-- probably best to
create a shortcut for this.

This way all your data- and email specifically- is in one place
so that you know eher it is, it can be backed up easily, it is portable,
you can maintain mutliple email accounts for multiple users, etc.

Stan, thanks for the input.

I am at a total loss here. How can I identify the old email
subdirectory? I am not sure of what I am looking for there, are there
some special file extensions or subdirectories I need to look for? Do
I copy all the files and subdirectorys?

How do I 'then start up Eudora (v7.x) pointing at your (new) email
directory'

Thanks, Fawzley

Finding the old files is the tricky part. I'll see if I can put together
some hints but they could literally be anywhere if you didn't
choose a location. From your note it sounds like they are in
the application directory so look there for items created after the install.

Once you find and copy your items though it gets easy

start eudora with command line option of your email directory

eudora C:\users\<login>\mail or the like

Put this is a shortcut if you like.

OK- as an experiment I fired up Eudora with no options and it
created a new mail directory under Documents and Settings

It appears to key off of HOMEPATH. So you might check
your setting ( bring up shell and type in echo %HOMEPATH% )
and look there.

Otherwise search around for .mbx, .toc

Once you find the mail copy all the directories and files
to your new mail directory.

I keep my data on a network share, so my shortcut looks like

"C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe" \\mixed\stan\Mail

Your's would presumably be similar, pointing to wherever
you decide. I strongly suggest making this new directory
the place you keep all of your data from all programs.
That way it is all in one place. SInce mine is on a server
I can move to any machine on my home network and access
all the same files, such as my mail.

With even one machine though it helps immensely with routine
admin such as backups or migration or program updates.

What version of Eudora will you be installing into Vista?
(is it time for an update to the latest version?)

> Where are the files located on the old box

"Where are my mailboxes and other Eudora data files located"
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2722hq.html

More details for finding old files
(IGNORE advice about "copying to same path on new computer,"
because this is wrong for Vista):

"How to move and back up files (Win)"
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1602hq.html

> and where are the files to be located on the new box.

If I were doing it myself, I'd do it this way:

Install Eudora in Vista, as if everything is brand new;
let the installer pick the default location for you,
then follow the above instructions to find out
where your data folder now appears
(don't bother completing the "new account wizard,"
since all we want to do is find the folder).

Close Eudora, copy your old data folder contents into that folder.

Even if your "old" _data_ folder contains programs, etc.,
any such extra _program_ files will simply be superfluous now,
and you can delete them, if desired -- or leave them,
since your new computer probably has such an ocean of disk space
that a few unused files will make no difference at all.

[append to previous post, excuse my not quoting it]

One added detail:

If your original "Eudora.ini" file (in your data folder)
contains a line like this:

AutoReceiveAttachmentsDirectory=[a path]

Then I would REMOVE that line when copying to the new computer
(because the new location will be different),
and let Eudora use its own default path,
which will probably be exactly where your copied attachments
reside anyway (usually in an "Attach" sub-folder
of your main email data directory).

If your original attachments were elsewhere, then
move them to this default location in the new box.

Now everything that's newly installed in the new (Vista) box
will be in the ideal, expected location,
which may simplify your future life with Eudora,
as well as with Vista.

To make backups easier I place all Eudora Data into one folder and all email
attachments into another.

When you install Eudora just define a data folder (C:\EudoraData as an
example) when called for in the installation. Also name an attachment
folder.

On your old PC run Eudora and look into Tools-Options-Attachments for the
folder that contains your attachments and copy them to the new machine.

Now on your old PC use Windows Explorer and search for In.mbx. The folder
where it resides contains all of your mailboxes(mbx), tables of
content(TOC), addresses(nndbase), and other files. To see all of the
extensions for files to copy just look at the data folder on the new PC.

*** Do NOT copy the ini files because they will be different for your new
PC.

Now you can do an easy backup and synch between PCs using the data and
attachment folders. (Synch requires the same version of Eudora and the same
folder setup on both machines)
