Is there any way to uninstall and reinstall Eudora's Fast Search (X1)
feature without reinstalling Eudora itself? I have a problem that
reindexing does not appear able to solve. My Eudora version is 7.1.0.9
(Paid Mode 91).
Thank you for any help.

Instead of reindexing you could delete, or rename, UserJunkDB.txt in
the Plugins subdirectory of your Data directory.

Nothing! I should have said deleting the Search folder. I shouldn't
post before having had my second cup of coffee ;)

I renamed the file as you suggested, but the problem remains. The
original file was 607KB, Eudora created a new one of 67bytes. When I then
tried to reindex, the progress bar advanced to about 20% in the first few
minutes but then remained there indefinitely; the new UserJunkDB.txt file
is still 67bytes.
Thank you for trying to help. Perhaps there is another file I should
have deleted instead?

You seem to be right. (See my reply to Ajo's post.) Do you have any
ideas? Basically, what I want to do is delete the current index and start
over but the Reindex command just hangs (runs forever without doing
anything).

I tried that too. (Actually, I got the delete idea from your post, and
the Search directory seemed the most likely candidate.) Apart from
reconstituting the Search directory and its contents, Eudora behaved as I
described in my previous post: progress bar to about 20% in a few minutes
and then stopped moving altogether.
What do I do now?

Either use the "Reindex" button or delete the "Search" folder
(the latter should be done only with Eudora not running).

To see whether re-indexing is progressing,
look in the "Spool" subfolder,
in which new index files should appear, and be growing.

The option "Show index update progress in Task Status Window"
may also be elected, then use "Tools" | "Task Status"
to see that window.

How do you know it is running,
and how do you know it is not doing anything?

If you downloaded a new copy of 7.1.0.9 since June 2008,
and created a new installation (or had removed the old programs),
then you might currently be missing program file "x1lib.dll";
in this case, no reindexing will ever take place,
because without that program file,
the feature no longer exists.

Qualcomm removed that library in 2008 because they would otherwise
have been obliged to continue paying x1.com to distribute it,
but since Qualcomm stopped selling Eudora, the revenue stream
required to keep paying the vendor no longer exists.

Those who actually paid Qualcomm should keep their original installer files,
or backups of their program files, because only the original
Eudora v7 installers will install the X1 library module.

If index building starts, then apparently the X1 feature is still present.

Try indexing without any other activity (e.g. even turn off
periodic mail checking "every NN minutes" by making NN zero).

If this does not eventually complete (which could take a very long time
for a large total volume of mail), see whether you can ascertain
which mailbox(es) didn't get indexed, and anything about
such mailbox(es) -- how many messages, how large, any index problems?

It might be helpful to get a log:

Norman, if it turns out you need the older version of the Eudora installer
that does have the "x1lib.dll" that John mentioned above, lemme know and I
can make it available to you.

The one I have is dated 02June2008 and when installed, includes the above
file.

I have an old version of the installer and it does include x1lib.dll, but
thank you for your offer. (I did manage to solve my problem with the help
of the log file, following the advice of John Meyers?see my post above.)

Dear John,
Thank you very much for your help. With it, I was able to solve my
problem.
I installed the log file, as you suggested, deleted the Search
directory and ran Reindex again. The log file showed problems with (and did
not progress beyond) one of my mailboxes, so I deleted (renamed) it. Then
Reindex got stuck on another mailbox, so I removed it as well. With these
two out, the reindexing proceeded to completion and subsequent fast
searches worked as expected. I then returned the problematic mailboxes, one
at a time, after rebuilding their toc files. Indexing worked fine.
Thank you again.
