The second one you listed is the MAC version. The first one you
listed is the Windows version.

Spent 2+ hours on line Friday night trying to download the upgrade.
IE 3.0 got to 5.07 M, _twice_, and them froze the download. The 3rd
time I tried NS 2.02, which got as far as 5196 K before freezing. I
have downloaded 10 M+ files from other sites with IE in the last week,
and think I have done the same with NS. Any help on what might be the
problem. I have sent a note to software.net, but maybe somebody has
an quicker solution.

NOT if you live outside the USA or Canada!
Seems a bit crazy to me - I mean it is not munitions like PGP <g>
Why only Eudora - us aliens can order other software from the USA and
Eudora v2.2 was available. Why not v3????????????????????

It there's an FTP site, and you have FTP access from your IP, I
recommend that you FTP it rather than trying to get it via your
browsers. It will be faster and more effective.

Yeah. Had the same thing. DL stopped at 5199K of the 5211K
promised. Tried it twice with the same result...

BUT... the file unpacked fine and installed fine... except that
I only got a blank screen when it was supposed to be displaying
the license agreement during the install.

I wonder if something else is missing, too. Still, it seems to be
working just fine.

I too have the same problem. When I tried to use the file as downloaded after
it stalled at 5196k it tries to execute but fails with some sort of incomplete
message. I tried three times with no success. If anyone has any solutions I
sure would like to here them. I'm going to call Softwarenet but don't know if
they are available on the weekend.

Add my name to the list of frustrated purchasers of the Eudora
Pro upgrade. Fortunately, I am already using Eudora Pro 3.0 (Beta
32), but it is frustrating to have purchased the final release and not
be able to download it.

Ditto Rick!
This software.net needs to be responsible and make sure their business
and downloads are going smoothly during all hours instead of taking the
customer's money and not responding to their problems. This is a good
way to lose a lot of customers I would think. Oh well, not my problem.

...sometimes it's better to deal with the company that designs and sells
the product. There's better support, and you have a place to go with a
complaint. If you really want the new commercial version 3.0 contact the
Eudora people.

Add me to the list of disgruntled Software.net EudoraPro 3.0 folk. I tried a
total of four times to get the upgrade (three times with Netscape 3.0 and once
with InternetExplorer 3.01) until I was finally told I made too many attempts.
Each time, the transfer got around 5196K and just stopped. On a 2B ISDN
line, the transfer was jamming along until that magic 5196K.

Quite frankly, if they are going to offer this type of service, then they'd
better have someone there ready to answer the phone on the weekends. As it
is, I'm tempted to call my credit card company and report I did not get
product for something I paid for already...

I experienced precisely the same problems as above: halted download at
about 4-5mb (using both 288 modem and T1 connections) until repeated
attempts to complete produced the dreaded too many downloads, despite
the fact that none was complete. I attempted to unpack the largest
pack1.exe file saved. Surprisingly it unpacked successfully, and the
installation succeeded, except that the "do you accept this license
agreement..." screen displayed no agreement text. The program runs
fine so far.

I flamed software.net and demanded that my credit card number be
released from the obligation to pay, before the attempt to unpack and
install. Nevertheless, the program did not completely download, and
it's still an incomplete porgram for which I paid full price. I would
advise against this method of purchase.

Pay the extra $10 and excercise patience by ordering the product from
a "hard" vendor.

Sure have. I got a response this morning stating that they are looking into
the problem and will notify me when the "problem" is fixed. In addition, the
download count will be reset. But since then, I haven't heard anything and
have fired off another message stating if they haven't fixed the problem by
the end of today (being Monday), I want charges reversed.

I'd MUCH rather FTP it with FTP client software rather than rely on the
browser. Oh well...

Ok fistly let me apologize. We blew it big time.

Several things went wrong at one time. There is no excuse and
I'm not about to defend it, however for those who are interested here
is what happened:

Fistly we put in a new high capacity download server (three 45 mbit
DS3 connections). It based on a SUN Ultra sparc machine running Solaris
2.51. The is a bug in 2.51 which sometimes causes the last packet of
an TCP connection to not be sent. We have now applied the patch and
tested it and downloads will work when we come back up.

Secondly we had a database failure - we are almost done with the
restore (It took a while to scan through 80+ Gbytes of backup)
and will have the system back shortly.

Those who purchased Eudora 3.0 or the upgrade over the weekend will
get some email from us when they can retry the download.

Once again our Apologies, this was not our usual standard of opertion
and we are taking steps to ensure that it does not happen again.

Maybe ESD (Electronic Software Distribution) is not quite ready for prime
time, but I think we're going to be seeing a lot of it in the future
and I have no doubt that the process will get smoother as the ESD
software is refined and as users become more familiar and comfortable
with the process.

Worth noting, however, is the fact that the unpacking of the the
distribution envelope (PACK1.EXE) using the emailed key took as long as
the download at 28.8kbps using a 486DX/66 machine. Hence, even if
one has a faster internet connection, one is still subject to a
rather slow process of reconstituting the downloaded file into its
useable parts.

To borrow a phrase: I have seen the future, and it may work someday.

Cheers,
The Old Bear

They are clearly having a difficult time - I had two aborted downloads,
but was sucessful on the third attempt. I decided not to cancel when I
visited Qualcomm's site and discovered that, even if I did buy direct,
it would still, if downloaded, come from software.net.

Mileage may vary I guess. After seeing the message in my mailbox, I tried
again. Though far shy of the speed I was getting over the weekend (2B ISDN),
the transfer did make it just fine. This was about 10:30pm PDT. Had it
failed, I would have asked for a refund today.

This thing COULD work. They just have to get the kinks out.

As of now (10:30 Pacific Time on the 22nd) we have downloaded over 1000 copies and
it's working 100%. I posted an update from another news server which didn't seem
to make it out - the final answer was a strange interaction between Netscape and
Solaris which causes the netscape server to not close the TCP connection - all the
data is sent but the final 'FIN' packet never gets sent (I looked through several
5meg packet traces to figure this). It only shows up under extreme load (like 500
people trying to DL eudora at once). Switching to the Apache webserver on the
download host fixed it.

Anyway it's working and we are talking with sun et al about why it fails.

Once again we apologize and will refund money to anybody who does not wish to try
the download again. We are less than happy with how this has gone and we are taking
steps to ensure it does not happen again.

Maybe they have an exclusive marketing agreement for international
sales with another company with more experience in that area, in order
to avoid running afoul of import restrictions, taxes, etc. Some of
the companies that sell over the internet are breaking the law by
failing to report such transactions to the local authorities. This
can get pretty sticky, especially in the case of Treaty obligations
where they can be prosecuted in U.S. courts.

There have been instances of some rather large U.S. corporations who
have been failing to comply with Canadian GST regulations by falsely
under-declaring the value of their exports to Canada. They have been
charged and are facing prosecution in the U.S. for tax evasion under
the Canada - U.S. Tax Treaty. Under these laws, directors and senior
officers of the company can be held criminally responsible.

I also had no problems with the download. My ISP's mail apparently went
down during the down load, and I did not receive the E-Mail with the
unlocking code. After I verified my mail was indeed broke I got help over

A call to Software.net on their toll free number got a

I know from other posts they had a problem earlier in the week, but they
appear to have rectified that.
