Since having to swap XP laptops (the disk failed on the original one)
the old PGPEudoraPlugin4.dll no longer seems to work. As far as I know
it's not supposed to work under XP, but seemed to on my old laptop.
Anyway - now I am trying the free download of PGP Desktop 9.6.2 (build
2014). Initially I couldn't figure out how to sign/encrypt anything, but
now I see there's a popup from the system tray which allows me to do
these actions on the current window. So far so good.

Now comes the real thing: I compose the mail, which has very long lines
of text in it which MUST NOT wrap; the mail is being sent to a database
server which gobbles up the contents automatically but which is unable
to deal with wrapped lines.

Unfortunately, when signing the message window, PGP wraps the text lines
in the window.

I fixed this in Eudora itself years ago with:

WordWrapColumn=255
WordWrapMax=255

in my eudora.ini file.

Anyone know of a way to prevent PGP doing its own wrapping?

Thanks,

Tim, I don't know anything about your problem, but if you Google 'pgp word
wrap eudora', there are several entries. Maybe one will help.

Why not use S/MIME with Eudora. It is certificate based which means
your recipients do not have to look up your public key.

Get a free email certificate from Thawte.

I only have the one recipient, a database server. It has my public PGP
key for authentication and expects my mails to it to be PGP signed. This
is the only instance in which I send signed mails.

The plugin which came with PGP 7 doesn't work with PGP 9,
at least not the free PGP 9, which does not offer any integration
with email clients, other than by in-line operations on text windows.

Actually, just like Eudora, PGP Desktop is just one download,
and features are enabled or disabled according to subsequently entered
license name and code. Basic "free" features always work,
as has been the ongoing PGP tradition and agreement with its author,
but email plugins are not considered basic any longer.

It wouldn't if the lines were already short enough
(you could pre-wrap selected text in Eudora,
and you can set the Eudora line wrap width yourself,
altho not in the GUI).

Time's too short for me to check further,
hope your other references pan out.

Yes, I think I finally made it work.

I can't afford to have it wrap it AT ALL :-)

I already put stuff in eudora.ini to stop Eudora, in effect, from
wrapping. The lines are long and they have to be.

Do you mean that you made the old plugin work,
or just made PGP Desktop version 9 work?

Any info that makes the plugin work with PGP 9
(or if you found a new plugin)
would of course be most interesting.

All PGP features (presumably including email client integration)
should be enabled upon entry of one's 30-day trial registration info,
but I didn't bother entering mine.

Anyone can get a free trial and download of late-model PGP Desktop at
http://www.pgp.com/downloads/
http://www.pgp.com/downloads/desktoptrial.html
http://www.pgp.com/downloads/desktoptrial2.php [detailed info]

Version 9 does offer (besides its bloat) many improvements over PGPv7,
even in the free features -- one example is that every key ID
is identified, rather than "Good signature" (made by which key?),
hotkeys are included for both text windows and clipboard,
and the interface is now as modern and sophisticated as you can get.
File (and free space) wiping remain among the free features.

Did you find the solution yet?

For PGPv9, find file "PGPprefs.xml" (Application Data/PGP...)

Partial default content:

<key>wordWrapEnable</key>
<true></true>
<key>wordWrapWidth</key>
<integer>76</integer>

This appears adjustable :)

There are normal reasons for wrapping, however,
which all relate to clear-signing in-line,
and would be eliminated when using PGP/MIME,
but one doesn't seem to get access to PGP/MIME
in "free mode" of PGP (if using for commercial purpose,
one could of course actually purchase PGP :)

The same info, from a PGP Corp Tech Support person:

http://forums.pgpsupport.com/viewtopic.php?t=3661

And user experience:

http://www.webservertalk.com/message1623786.html
http://www.webservertalk.com/archive267-2006-8-1623786.html

Changing the "wordWrapEnable" key from "true" to "false"
might also do it (suppress PGP wrapping entirely), allowing
the normal default of 76 for "wordWrapWidth" to be remembered,
for when you want to re-enable it.

Apparently PGPv8 had this in its GUI,
but PGPv9 has suppressed it.

The problem remains,
that any intermediate server or software, seeing the long lines,
could still come along and wrap it, "just to help,"
but those which I use tend to keep their hands off.

John,

Thanks! I changed the value from 76 to 255, and just tried signing the
same mail again and it doesn't wrap!! 255 is in fact the same value that
I've used in the eudora.ini file and should be much longer than any lien
I would send.

Not really being a Windows user I wouldn't have known where to look for
the application data, so your clue above was what I needed.

I still have to try sending the data but that won't be an issue for this
group.

Cheers -- tim
