From time to time I'm getting error (among others!), which is recorded
in my eudora.log file and I copy it below:

Wed Jun 17 01:11:53 2009
Version 5.1
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "Error reading from network\r\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "\r\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "Cause: Connection closed by foreign host. (0)"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "SSL Negotiation Failed: You have configured this
personality/protocol to reject any exchange key lengths below 0.\r\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: ", But the negotiated exchange key length is -1\r
\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: " Hence this established secure channel is
unacceptable. Connection will be dropped.\r\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "\r\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "\r\n"
19584 8:0.0 Dialog: "Cause: (-6992)"

I would appreciate your advise to help me to correct this problem.

Also, where could I find meaning of these numbers in the eurora.log
file (19584 8:0.0) and (-6992)?

I use EUDORA 5.1 on MS-Windows XP SP-3.

There are various SSL issues in older versions,
some of which have no other work-around than updating Eudora,
and I believe that this is one of those,
as you may find by searching both this newsgroup's archives
and Qualcomm's forum archives, for "6992" and/or "6994"

The latest versions use a completely different SSL library,
have more recent "root certificates" for SSL,
can be configured for all public ISPs
[there was no suport for "Message submission port (587)" in v5],
and numerous other fixes and improvements which will do you good,
as you may begin to appreciate upon viewing the detailed
"Release notes" accompanying later versions,
or some additional "insider" information
(such as Katrina Knight always seems to have :)

To satisfy those who hate change,
everything through 7.1 still works the same as always
(one can always ignore and not use added features),
and even the v5 toolbar icons can be retained,
if the newer icons are too shockingly colorful :)

http://www.eudora.com/download/ Get version 7.1

Even for Windows 98 (in case anyone else is reading this),
all Eudora versions before 6.2.3.4 should be updated
(6.2.5.6 is good for Win98, 7.1 works almost perfectly anyway,
with easy work-arounds for two minor issues on Win98).

I'm getting the exact same error and I've been using 7.1 since it
came out. So, it's not the version.

I love Eudora but it seems to get glitchier and glitchier and I assume
it's because it's old and Microsoft keeps updating things that I
suspect might conflict with it.
??

I'm going to give up on it for today and hope that tomorrow it will
have decided to behave properly.

All past cases of the error symptoms previously discussed
have occurred only to people holding onto old versions,
and have been corrected by updating to at least 6.2.3.4,
so I'll have to continue to opine that it is the version
(of the SSL library, plus some "root certificate" updates)

Re-check "Help" | "About Eudora"
both for version and for the "Data" and "Application" paths.

Re-install 7.1 over the current "Application" path,
also telling it that mail is located in the current "Data" path
(or "user app data" if it says "App[lication] Data" anywhere in the path)

Running the installer only refreshes the program files
(and some Registry entries); does not touch any user files.

With what server name (and what port or what "Secure Sockets" setting)
do you receive this error number? I would be happy to check that server
against my own version -- thus far, I have never failed to get
a successful SSL connection to any server that anyone has ever mentioned,
in connection with mysterious unsolved problems.

Also, what plugins are you using?
(see "Special" | "Message Plug-ins Settings")

MS-DOS comands are old, but you might notice that they still work
under all versions of Windows, as does a large collection
of my best Windows apps and tools, no matter how long ago written.

What version of Windows? What "glitches"?

I regularly read reports that say Eudora is as healthy as ever,
even on Vista 64-bit and on Windows 7,
the sole reported issue being that of selecting many items at once
from an address book on Vista (due to a possibly identified
change in a Windows API, for which several easy work-arounds exist).

Therefore, to vague reports of Eudora dying
(which extensive follow-ups
regularly trace back to other software or hardware),
I can only return a response attributed to Mark Twain,
after hearing that a newspaper in Europe
had (mistakenly) announced his passing:

"The reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated" :)

In addition to the questions about Windows version,
mail server name and port (or "Secure Sockets" setting in Eudora),
I forgot to also ask:

Using what anti-virus program (and version)?

With what settings or setup about checking email?
