Is there any way to configure Eudora to identify inbound emails on the
server (ie before downloading) that satisfy certain criteria, and delete
them without downloading?

I know it's technically possible, so if not, why not?

Just a satisfied user - to the extent I paid the guy.

No.

That's not how POP3 works.

I find it easier to use a free anti-spam programme called "Mailwasher"
( www.mailwasher.net ). This programme will show mail on the server,
then to process the mail you press the LAUNCH EMAIL BUTTON and presto
the mail you haven't deleted is in your email box... It's a nifty
programme too.. Blocks spam, and you can bounce your address so it
looks like it doesn't exist to those goddamn spammers...

Well worth a try..

what proportion of spammers does anyone estimate use valid return
addresses so that they would receive the bounce?

Probably about the same proportion that remove spoofed, bounced
addresses, or for that matter, ANY addresses from their DB.

It's in the filters, in the "Actions" pull down menues. there you can choose Server and then Fetch or
Delete.

Virtually none, assuming that you're talking about actual spammers who
send mail out randomly and not legitimate businesses whose mailing lists
you've done something to be added to. Bouncing messages of that sort does
nothing but cause increased traffic on the internet, using up the
resources of your service provider and any other server the mail goes
through, and effectively mail-bombing any poor person whose address is
being used by the spammers.

That being said, Mailwasher is apparently a very useful program for
avoiding mail you don't want to get. Personally, I've never found any need
to use something like that because I may get 5 or 6 pieces of spam a day
compared to 400-500 real messages. Spam volume for me is a drop in the
bucket and I just filter it into a spam mailbox, where I can give it a
once-over every so often and report it if I feel like it. For people who
get enough to be a bother, Mailwasher seems quite effective.

I tried to calculate it but bluescreened when the ratio went negative
;->

Seriously, no hit & run spammers look at bounces, in fact they actively
avoid them because they eat bandwidth better used for their outbound
spewage. There is a very good reason to send them anyway, and it is
unfortunately only going to get to be a better reason as time goes by;
more and more 'legitimate' marketers are dipping their toes into the
email marketing pond, and most of them at least pretend to maintain
their lists.
