(The following discussion affects Eudora for Windows. I am uncertain
as to how these issues affect Eudora for Macs.)

1--Because of a bug in earlier versions of Eudora, in order to SEND
email to Earthlink's authenticated SMTP servers, you MUST upgrade to,
at least, Eudora 5.1.

The Earthlink support web page at
http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=19293 (as of 10/26/07) is
totally misleading in that it implies that one can use Eudora 4.x for
Windows to send email to Earthlink. That is not true. IT IS TOTALLY
IMPOSSIBLE TO SEND EMAIL TO EARTHLINK USING ANY EUDORA VERSION PRIOR
TO EUDORA 5.1.

2--If you have any non-Earthlink domain email accounts, you are WELL
ADVISED to upgrade to, at least, Eudora 6 in order to gain the
usability of Eudora 6's "SMTP Relay Personality" feature. If you have
any non-Earthlink domain email accounts, you can still use Eudora 5.1
to 5.2.x, but it's way difficult and cumbersome.

The Earthlink support web page re setting up Eudora 5.2.x, at
http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=22779 (as of 10/26/07) fails
to mention in any way the benefits of upgrading to Eudora 6 or how to
set up Eudora 5.2.x if you do have any non-Earthlink domain email
accounts.

3--If you have any non-Earthlink domain email accounts, you are WELL
ADVISED to upgrade to, at least, Eudora 6.2.3.4 in order to gain the
advantage of its "Use submission port (587)" checkbox option which
allows for changing between port 25 and port 587--for each individual
persona--by the simple means of checking or un-checking a checkbox.

To set up Eudora 6.2.3.4 and later, see the Earthlink support web page
at http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=45484

See my related post (10/26/07) entitled "Authenticated SMTP --
Explanation of which Eudora version you need to use to make it work"
for the full explanation.

You can download different versions of Eudora at:
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2350hq.html

You can--FOR FREE--convert Eudora 5.2 into "Paid Mode" using the
information at: http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2759hq.html

My experience is that once you have a registration code for one
version of Eudora, you can use that code to obtain "Paid Mode" in any
earlier version. I know that doesn't help one who is trying to
"upgrade", but, when I paid for version 7.1.0.9, it meant that I was
able to download, install and use version 6.2.5.6 in "Paid Mode".

You can download old Eudora manuals at:
http://eudora.com/techsupport/kb/2515hq.html

To find the appropriate server names for your Earthlink domain, see
http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=28968

I post the foregoing because Earthlink's support personnel were of
absolutely no help whatsoever and I had to puzzle all this out by
myself. My entire learning experience was prompted by Earthlink
pulling the plug on their legacy mail.pipeline.com SMTP server which I
had used since 1996. Nobody should have to go through what I went
through.

Thank you very much, Sandra Day,
for thoughtfully documenting your experiences and solutions,
providing references for others to follow.

Problems with ISP's SMTP servers and firewalls,
and matching up their demands with Eudora's option settings
(particularly with ISPs who refuse to acknowledge Eudora's existence,
or who supply very poor support at any level),
account for a substantial portion of all the problems posted here.

Since you research, write, and thoroughly document things so well,
you could be Katrina Knight's replacement :)
[Katrina is a heroine to generations of Eudora users,
who has not been posting recently]

Quite a few others also regularly do this kind of service;
thanks for joining in, and visit again some time.
