I do think I know that this occurs only when the mail sent by OE
contains formatting and is sent as multipart mail. If you ask your
correspondents to only send you unformatted mail, only plain text, I
think it won't happen.
But I'm hoping someone comes up with a more detailed explanation and
especially some setting in OE that will prevent this from happening even
if the mail contains formatting.
(I'm also wondering if it is something that was introduced with OE
5.01).

You are correct. It is not due to Eudora. I just found another URL that
explains things a little more clearly. Try this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q240/3/33.asp

You keep this up and we're going to appoint you the official Microsoft
database searcher. <g>
Did you notice that under Cause they don't actually explain *why* it
happens?

Thanks very much for looking that up. The description completely fits
the problem, so I'm guessing this is it. For some reason I alway forget
to check their database. I guess that's at least one thing Microsoft's
good at: making an inventory of their own bugs. :-)
(Note that they forget to mention one other possible solution on the OE
end, which is for the user not to use the reply function but simply to
compose a new mail.)

I think I read where this happens when a message is sent by OE to someone (non
OE) and replied to, then (re) replied to by OE. Nest time I get one, I'll try the

Adam, I don't often see an answer from MS that is usable by non engineers.
Reminds me of that old joke where a balloonist in Redmond gets lost, sees a
big building, writes a note on a piece of cardboard and holds it so the people
in the building can see it. Note says "Where am I?" Reply from the people in
the building says "You are in a balloon." The balloonist then knows he is a MS
HQ, and heads for the airport. When asked how he knew that was MS HQ, he said
that was a typical answer from a "computer type". Perfectly accurate, but
completely useless.
Adam, Frank and Rick:
BINGO! I proved it out with my correspondents here. In order for
Eudora not to receive garbage in a multi-part letter from OE, OE
must be configured so that the block "include message in reply"
is checked. This switch is located in Tools/Options/Send.
Glad this one is over with. It was driving me nuts. You too, eh
Frank?
Thanks to y'all for the input.
Andre.
