Setting up Eudora to work with Yahoo mail?

I thought that was not possible since I've been under the impression for
many years Yahoo needed to be a POP3 account in order for it to work.
Unless of course there's a difference when using a "paid?" Yahoo email
account?...something I don't even know if they have.

I know Gmail can be set up with Eudora because it's a POP3 account.


So what gives with Yahoo? Can Eudora really be set up to accept (and send)
Yahoo email?

It's free here in Canada and a short while ago when there was a
similar question here I set up another test account in Australia.
Both are free.

Eudora is never the problem.
Enter the right server names, commonly
pop.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com
and choose "Required, Alternate Port" for each SSL.

As of when I last checked, to get your free USA Yahoo account
to let you retrieve Inbox mail using POP, you did not need
to have an account acquired in any other country -- you
needed only to edit your preferences and declare your
"region" to be Asia, for example. This did not change
the language at Yahoo's site, but it may have caused
different default news and other "web portal" items
to be displayed, as appropriate for that region.

As to sending via SMTP, I found that even my unaltered
"USA region" Yahoo account was happy to send mail via SMTP,
even when it wasn't preferring "Asia" and wasn't allowing POP!

Here it's said that Yahoo also offers IMAP access:

I would like to know how to configure Eudora to get Yahoo e-mail, too.

I am trying to configure Eudora v7.1.0.9 to download my mail in my Yahoo Paid Mode account. I set up the incoming server as pop.mail.yahoo.com, and the outgoing server as smtp.mail.yahoo.com. Outgoing mail works perfectly. Incoming mail, though, does not work. It just sits there. I never even get the "task running" symbol.

The Yahoo tech support tells me I have to configure Eudora's outgoing port to 465 w/SSL, and incoming port to 995 w/SSL. I see NO way to do that from within Eudora.

Suggestions???

Tools; Options; Sending Mail:

Fill in the first 3 windows, SMTP relay = none, check the first three
checkboxes, uncheck the fourth, and set the last window to
"Required, Alternate Port".

Each server has a "Secure Sockets when [Sending or Receiving]"
drop-down selection. Choose "Required, Alternate Port"
if the port number is 465 (SMTP), 995 (POP) or 993 (IMAP).

Generally choose "If Available, StartTLS"
for any other port number, such as
25 or 587 (SMTP), 110 (POP) or 143 (IMAP).

Eudora automatically selects whichever of the above port numbers
is appropriate for the combination of protocol (SMTP,POP,IMAP)
and SSL ("alternate" ports) vs. "StartTLS" or none (other ports).

Generally never use "relay," generally always
"allow authentication" (for SMTP to use a name and password).

Enable "Check Mail" for each personality which you want
to fetch new mail when you invoke "Check Mail"

Outgoing mail tends to work for all Yahoo accounts;
incoming mail via POP tends to give an error message
if the Yahoo account is neither paid for that service
nor in a country or region where Yahoo provides it to everyone.

John, thank you for that detailed explanation! I followed your advice and Eudora worked perfectly for four months. Eudora downloaded my e-mails and deleted them from the Yahoo server, and sent out e-mails with my Yahoo account as the sender.

Then recently, within the past few weeks, Yahoo changed something, and now the downloads don't work any more. When Eudora tries to download, it displays the error message

Could not connect to "pop.mail.yahoo.com"

Cause: connection refused (10061)

I can't find any reference to e-mail changes in Yahoo, and I know for darn sure that *I* didn't change anything recently.

I have this dame issue for few weeks i finally contacted yahoo over this & i got email saying they change the pop & stmp settings but doesn't work same pop settings. I have paid account if they don't fix this soon time for refund & file charges against them. It's on yahoo end not Eudora I also tried this on Outlook same problems ...

This happened to me as well. It occurred on the second day of that big outage they had, so I just assumed it was a part of that and didn't bother trying to fix it for about a week.

Check your Yahoo personality in Eudora. Check the setting of "Secure Sockets when Receiving". I had it set to "If available, STARTTLS", which didn't work. When I changed it to "Required, Alternate Port", Yahoo incoming email started working again.

I also never received any warning that email configuration was going to change. Shame on Yahoo for silently changing their required protocol.
