I am using Eudora 7.1.0.9 (paid version) and Windows 7. I keep a shortcut
to attachments on my desktop, and I occasionally copy pictures that have
been emailed to me from that location to a location where I categorize
pictures, then I delete them from the attachments folder. I currently
should have a large number of pictures in the attachments folder, and I have
seen them on numerous occasions. I planned to copy many of them today, but
when I opened the folder there were only a few old images. However, if I
open email, I can still see the attachments. Therefore, they obviously
still exist but I have been unable to find them.

I did have one unexpected action today, and it involved those same images.
That is, I received a message from our church secretary with an attachment
that was supposed to include a list of people for me to contact. The
attachment was called winmail.dat, but I was unable to open it. I had to
select a file association but was unsuccessful in finding one to open the
document. I finally selected MS Office. That did not open the document,
but all of the images from the attachment folder were suddenly displayed. I
tried to copy some from that source, but they could not be copied ("paste"
was always grayed out after I had selected "copy"). I changed file
association since that had not opened the document I needed. I cannot
guarantee that this was the source of the problem, but I suspect that it
was.

Can anyone help? I have numerous images that are important to me, and I
simply cannot locate them. I also sent a "test" message to myself with an
attachment, and that also does *not* appear in the attachment folder. Just
as with the others, I can open the attachment from within Eudora but cannot
find it in the attachment folder on my desktop.

Thanks for any help.

In my experience any winmail.dat attachments were always useless. I
believe that one or more microsoft email programs generate these
attachments.

It may be that your shortcut got mangled or you told Eudora that another
directory is now for attachments, and therefore the shortcut isn't
pointing to the correct directory anymore. Look at the filepath that the
latest email with an attachment displays for that attachment and try to
locate it that way.

I suspect that what you have written is correct, and I actually tried to
check for another directory before I wrote my request for help. However, I
have not been able to locate the path. The attachment simply shows as
"winmail.dat" in Eudora. When I try to do a search for it, it does not show
up in the search box. So, I tried to search for one of the pictures from
other email. When I type in the filename for the picture (attachment), the
path appears to be identical to what is entered in Eudora under
Tools>Options>Attachments. That is, here is the path shown for one image:
C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora\attach\DSCN0315.jpg. When I
check Options in Eudora, I can see s\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora.
Both the beginning and end of the path are cut off because the box is too
short for the path. Any time I try to click on that path with Eudora
Options to check it, it immediately opens so I cannot read how the path is
written. The location it opens to does show Qualcomm\Eudora\Attach.
However, I don't know how to use that to find images. Under "Attach," I
simply find names like Church Newsletters.fol, Embedded, EndPriv, etc.

Can you help me figure out how to get to an actual location where I could
find these attachments? In Vista, I would have been able to use My Computer
to follow the trail. Win 7 should not have data under the the program name,
and I can't "follow the trail" by opening "Computer" and then trying to find
it. I don't even see how I could rename the path for attachments in Eudora
because it immediately opens to the path that is already set anytime I click
on it, so I can't delete the path and add a new one.

Help??! I hope what I have written makes sense. You can probably see that
my knowledge is limited.

Thanks,
MaryL

I can't remember how it's done in Windows 7, but there IS a search
mode .

Does the attachment that you sent yourself have a name? Try searching
for that...I know it works in Windows 9 because the same thing
happened to me and I found them this way.

I just tried it again to test your method. As before, I can open the
attachment in Eudora but it does not show up in the "attach" folder on my
desktop. Then I searched for it -- and the path is exactly the same as the
path I showed in my previous message. But: Is there any way to manually
follow that path (like following a tree from the C:\ drive) since I haven't
been able to do it within Eudora and also have not succeeded by starting
with "computer"?

Thanks,
MaryL

The problem is *half-way* solved. I copied the entire path into the search
bar. That located the actual path, and when I clicked on it...there are all
of my pictures. So, I will immediately copy those pictures to the
categorized folders I previously set.

However: The "attach" folder on the desktop still does not show those
images, and any new attachments that are sent do not appear in that folder.
How can I replace that folder with a new one for the path that was found in
the search bar? I normally don't have any problem creating desktop
shortcuts, and I obviously created a short cut at one time. I don't
remember how I did that for Eudora. I was able to *copy* the folder to the
desktop, but that is not a shortcut and would not receive new attachments.
What is the correct method to create a shortcut for the newly-found "attach"
folder?

Thanks again,
MaryL

Right-click the correct folder, "Send To" > "Desktop (create shortcut)"

Rename or delete the old shortcut to avoid future confusion.
The path in any shortcut may be inspected via right-click > "Properties"

Attachment icons remain in the mailbox window,
and attachment paths remain in message content,
even if the attachment files have been deleted.

However, you can right-click on an incoming attachment path
and choose "Explore attachment" to open the given path,
if the attachment still exists at that path.

Attachments moved from their original incoming folder
to a new current Eudora attachments folder can be opened
from the message view, but "Explore Attachment" may not work for these.

> An attachment called winmail.dat

Usually sent by Microsoft Outlook, expecting the recipient
to also use Microsoft Outlook to read the mail.

The rest of the world has one set of email standards
for all content and attachments, while Microsoft has an incompatible method,
where the message and/or attachments are within the "winmail.dat" container.

The following free software opens Winmail.dat files,
and permits extracting the attachments as well as reading the messages:
<http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/winmail_opener/>

The following on-line service does this via your web browser,
without needing to install other software on your computer,
but involves your first uploading the Winmail.dat file
and then downloading the extracted parts:

Thanks! That did it. And thanks for the additional information and link to
the software.

I am assuming you can copy the path to the attach folder
(C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Qualcomm\Eudora\attach\) to the clipboard.
Then on your desktop click the shortcut once, then right-click it choose
properties and copy the new path into the target box.

A bit more about winmail.dat:

Winmail.dat is a proprietary Microsoft Outlook format.

See:
http://www.eudora.com/techsupport/kb/1552hq.html

You can open these files with this free application:
http://www.eolsoft.com/freeware/winmail_opener

Or you can upload these files here and open the files in your browser:
