I see the latest update for Thunderbird has added a Correspondents
column to replace To and From. They include a small arrow at the start
of the line to indicate whether the message is incoming or outgoing. One
feature of Eudora that I used extensively was to have incoming and
outgoing messages to/from a particular person all in the same folder,
ie, having all related messages int eh same folder.

With this, I feel that at last I can move away from Eudora which has
become increasingly difficult to use in the last year or so. Some mail
clients do not recognise Eudora messages and refuse to accept them.
Others just display them appallingly.

David, are you saying that some of the people you exchange email with
have reported problems either receiving or displaying your messages?
I've had no such reports myself. Perhaps you use some formatting
features in Eudora that I don't?

Yes, some messages just get bounced with an error message. I cannot say
I recall if they are formatted or not, but most of my messages are plain
text. In one case, all messages sent from Eudora to several addresses at
a particular company just disappeared without a trace. However, the same
messages sent from Apple Mail got through.

Wow, that's not good. No wonder you're looking for a replacement.

I'll probably just switch to Apple Mail when I eventually have to
move beyond Snow Leopard, unless Thunderbird or some other program
looks better to me at that point.

I have been using Apple Mail as well, and have had a few problems. What
really annoyed me was the periodic disappearance of all new mails. Mail
would beep when new messages arrived, but they would not show up in the
Inbox. The only solution I could get to work was to delete the account
then recreate it. Fortunately, these were IMAP accounts so all the
messages were still on the server, although I did still have to
redownload several gigabytes of them. :-(

There were other annoyances too, but this was the worst.

All this is using the Mountain Lion version of Mail. Newer versions seem
to have even more obnoxious problems.

BTW, if you do decide to upgrade, make sure you import your Eudora mail
into Mail or Thunderbird before you upgrade. Later versions do not
always know about Eudora format. Certainly, this is the case for
Thunderbird and you have to look for an older version first to do the
import, then upgrade to a newer version. The older version does not run
on the latest versions of OS X.

I actually used that Eudora converter program and brought all my mail
into Apple Mail last year. The converted file is hopelessly out of date
now, of course, but at least I know that the converter works and I can
do it again at some point when I finally have to let go of Eudora.

do you mean Eudoa Mailbox Cleaner?
Be aware that it does not run on Lion or higher...

Neither does Eudora, so that isn't a problem. :-)

... until the Snow Leopard machine you are using dies and you have to
get a new one that will not run Snow Leopard and will not be able to run
Eudora Mail Cleaner......

I was advising a fellow once who was responsible for the computers at a
small newspaper publisher. They were all 10 year old Macs running very
old software, and he boss did not see any reason to update the software
or the hardware.

The problem would arise when one of the machines died, and they would
have to chase after another 10 year old Mac to replace it. And working
10 year old Macs are not that common, and in a few years, working 15
year old Macs would be very scarce.

The alternative would be to buy a new one, but then you are stuck with
replacing all the machines as new software is unlikely to run on very
old machines. So perhaps new software would be required, as well as
conversion of all the old data files. All this while the newspaper is
waiting to be printed from the dead machine.

tbh Patty, even though I run Eudora in a virtual Snow Leopard machine, I
can see the time is going to come when this just becomes too hard and I
am going to have to move. So I might as well do it now.
