2. Many "new" messages were created that are in effect duplicates of old
messages in the in mailbox.
3. New outgoing e-mail messages are not appearing in the out mailbox
though they are transmitting correctly and are received by recipients.
I have trashed the Eudora TOC file in the system folder, rebuilt the
desktop, increased memory and reviewed the manual, all to no avail.
Any ideas?

Change them back (by selecting all the messages and then selecting
"Change:Status" from the Message menu. Hopefully it will stick.

Delete them. There are tools to help you will this (an Applescript comes
to mind) but if you sit down for a few minutes you should be able to do it
manually).
Look on my web page at <http://www.ka.net/eudora/> for the AppleScript.

Go to the Settings in the Special menu. Click on the large icon that says
"Sending Mail" (you may have to scroll up or down) and make sure that
"Keep Copies of outgoing mail" is checked (it is right near the bottom of
that screen).
Then do a crucial step: Compact your mailboxes. Command-Option-Click on
the bottom left hand box of your In box. It will probably take a minute or
two (depending on how much mail yo have), but that should keep your
problems from coming back.

Sorry this is so late. I haven't been able to get to c.m.e.m for a couple
of weeks.
I have run across problems #1 & #2 a number of times. (For me) It has
generally been a result of responding to a message about a corrutped, or
changed, mailbox. If you choose the option to create a new directory
instead of using the old one, you will often end up with the effects you
describe above.
I believe the multiple "duplicates" are versions of the messages that have
been saved or re-queued before the message was actually sent. At least my
diagnoses have indicated such on my System. Why Eudora keeps track of them
(the partial messages) I don't know.
FWIW I always quickly make a copy of the offending mailbox (and toc, if you
use that format) before telling Eudora to use a new or the old directory.
That way, if I end up with something I don't like, I can always go back and
choose the other option.
Cheers,
Bob
