I'm using 6.2.4 in OS 10.6.8, and I want to add an alert sound for New
Mail.

The alerts Eudora has, and which can be selected via the
Settings/Getting attention panel, live in System/Library/Sounds. So I'd
like to put my New Mail Bong AIFF file in there.

On this machine, that directory appears to be locked. If I ever knew,
I've forgotten how to unlock it. As I have in the past added alert
sounds to Eudora, maybe there's an alternative way to add a sound?

Any suggestions?

Peter, I see the non-Eudora sounds in that folder, but not the
Eudora sounds. Are third-party apps even allowed to put items
in System/Library?

I think you'd have to log in as root, but unless you're really familiar
with that, I wouldn't advise it! I've only ever done it a couple of times,
and was nervous the whole time. :-)

I can't find the location of the Eudora-specific sounds, but if there
is a way to add them, I'm quite certain it wouldn't be in the system
library. Can Eudora recognize the existence of sounds in your user
Library/Sounds folder?

Yes it can. Thank you- that's it.

Hey, great! I was just guessing. :-)

So you put the .aiff file in that folder, and then what?
You restarted Eudora and that sound showed up in the list
of available alert sounds?

I didn't restart Eudora. I just went into the Settings, and it was
there. Clicked on it, and it works.

Interestingly, it also works in a similar way in MacSOUP- except that
viewing the list of available alert sounds in Eudora there are the
Eudora specific sounds, then a line and the new sound, then another line
and all the local, user-specific sounds. In MacSOUP of course there are
no application specific sounds, and the local sounds and the new one are
in one list with no dividing lines. None of which is important, but a
nice demonstration of how neat and well thought out Eudora is.

As far as I am concerned, the disappearance of Rosetta is the worst
feature of 10.8. I'm sure Apple Mail is okay; millions of people use it
happily and on friends' Macs, so have I. But I do prefer Eudora. I don't
see myself getting Lion before I absolutely have to.
