A Problem with the 3 Paned Interface

I'm certainly no fan of the trend towards 3 panes in a single window;
mailboxes on the left, contents of mailbox on the upper right, and
contents of the message on the lower right. I personally find that it
limits the amount of stuff I can see at one time and forces way too much
scrolling. Not to mention that it looks too much like windoze. But
that's just me. :-)

I wanted to point out a potential problem with this interface that is
slightly more objective. If you use IMAP instead of POP, the contents
of a message are not downloaded until you open the message. This is
good, as often you'll want to delete spam without wasting time to
download and read it. So the problem with the 3 pane view is that as
soon as you select a message for deletion, you have to wait for it to
download and display in the other pane!

Worse yet, it's generally a bad idea to even OPEN spam email. If the
message is written to fetch an image from out on the web, the spammers
can tell that someone looked at their message and then know that they've
got an active email account and can spam it even more!

In Mail.app, I ended up doing a 'select all' to avoid opening spam, and
then deselecting the individual messages I wanted to keep. What a pane!
Luckily, both Mail.app and Eudora can open messages in a separate window
and avoid this problem.

Talk amongst yourselves...

This depends on your settings in "Personality Extra." I have my IMAP
account set to download everything up to 40k.

Actually, this does not have to be the case. In Eudora you can uncheck
"Automatically download HTML graphics" and disable this (inside "Fonts &
Displays").

You can download them manually if you want on individual messages. I try
to keep my friends from sending me HTML, though, so I rarely have to
download them later.
