I realize that I'm some decades late coming to this party, but
I have a question about editing the subject lines of Eudora
messages. How do you get them to show up in the message listings?
I tried quitting and relaunching Eudora, but the wording that
appeared in the Subject column was still the old subject. Which
means it's of no use whatsoever at this point...

You just type in the Subject line when you have the email open. When you
close it, the Subject will be changed to the new one. You can't change
the Subject line without the email being open.

What have you been trying to do instead?

That's what I did. Opened the message, clicked on the pencil, edited
the subject line, clicked Save when prompted upon closing the message.
The subject appearing in the Subject column was still the old one. I
have to open the message again in order to see the new Subject line,
which defeats the whole purpose of being able to see it in my mailbox.

You don't use the pencil and you don't change the Subject in the Subject
line of the message but the Subject at the very top of the email to the
right of the pencil. That is the Subject which is used for the Subject
in the message column.

You never see the Save message if you follow what I've written in the
previous paragraph. It changes it automatically.

If you're confused, send me an email by using the info below and I'll
work with you by sending an attachment.

Oh, got it, thanks.

So what's the pencil for? Editing the message text?

That's correct. While you could also change the Subject there (as you
had previously done), it doesn't affect the one you see in the column
menu.

You're quite welcome.

Yes, because there are two separate parts (files) per mailbox:

o Original messages (concatenated into a single file).
o Table of Contents (TOC).

A list of messages in a "mailbox window" displays info
contained only in the TOC, and that's what you must modify
(via the special extra field atop an opened incoming message)
to see the subject change in the mailbox window.

The "pencil" edits only the original message,
making a new copy in the original messages file,
without modifying any displayable fields of TOC entries.

Conversely, changes to the manually editable TOC subject field,
changes to status, labels and other indicators occur only in the TOC,
and do not affect anything in the original message content file.
