I have a client who is using Eudora 6.2.4 paid under Mac OS X v10.6.
He initially reported that when he tries to move more than two messages to
another mailbox, he encounters a message saying, "copy failed: an I/O error
has occurred." Later, he offered more detail:

When I tried today to transfer January emails from my inbox to a 2010
archive folder, I got the following response: Copy failed. 2010
(-36); An I/O error has occurred {25: 1150}. Selecting OK gives:
There was an error saving the mail -36, {25: 1431}.

He reports the same behavior, regardless of source/destination mailbox. Any
ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

My guess (and that's all it is) would be a corrupted settings file. The
settings file can be rebuilt by holding down all the modifier keys
(command-control-option-shift) and selecting Settings... from the
Special menu. That will keep the very basic settings (user name and
account info) but all the customizations will be lost.

To make it easier to reset all the customized settings, he can first
(before rebuilding the Settings) have Eudora give him a list of all his
Eudora configuration info: open a new message, then select "Insert
system configuration" from the Help menu. This will give him a list of
clickable x-eudora-settings he can use after rebuilding the Settings
file to get his setup back to what it was before.

I get this error sporadically. E.g., I just deleted 116 messages, and the 117th generated the -36 error, and any messages after that that I tried to delete. Usually quitting Eudora and then reopening fixes whatever problem there was. I just transferred this Eudora program from a desktop to a laptop, and the OS was recently reinstalled on the laptop for other reasons, so I doubt that another user's thought that this is a corrupted hard drive could be the problem. But corrupted settings might.

I've got the clear feeling, this happens when I marked a HTML mail or
one with pictures in it "read" but never actually opened the email.

Opening the email with content usually makes it possible to then move or
delete it.

I do not know if this might indicate an error in my settings file. Or if
this behavior can be reproduced by other EudoraOnMac users...

Go into the Mail folder. Change the name of the IN file to IN_archive or IN_whatever
Launch Eudora. A new IN file is created and blocked mail flows through

I just did this and it worked.
