Do you think threads will improve performance, or ??? I highly doubt
that BLT has been made thread-safe, but that's only an issue when you
use it in multiple threads. Threads will provide you concurrency, which
is good if you have multiple CPUs, and I could see uses for it in some
db operations, but is not always your friend. Oracle also provides
general asynchronous calls as well, does it not? Those may be better.

Yes: the asynchronous API is far, FAR more crucial
to what people generally mean by "performance".

The Tcl-only portion of BLT is thread-safe. I use the trick of
storing thread specific data with Tcl_SetAssocData because it also
works with Tcl 8.0 and 7.6. There may be a issues with signals and
Posix threads, because PThreads want to use SIGUSR1 and SIGUSR2.

The Tk related parts like Tk itself aren't thread-safe.
