I would like to have a script that checks the balance of my bank
account and downloads the statement. The manual mundane effort of
logging in and clicking around every month kills me.

Some of these sites make it quite difficult to automate, so I really
do not want to reinvent the wheel if I can avoid it. The question is,
how would I go about finding such scripts? Web searches have come up
dry so far, but I find it hard to believe everyone puts up with the
labor.

Check this out: http://webbotsspidersscreenscrapers.com/

This book uses php and Curl, but I've used the Curl extension to Tcl
to do similar things.

PHP would be good for this.

Of course you can try to pick your values out of the HTML, but much better is using a
HBCI software like http://www.willuhn.de/products/jameica/ if supported...

Packager : Fedora Project <http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla>
URL : http://www.aquamaniac.de/aqbanking/
Summary : A library for online banking functions and financial data
import/export.
Description :
The intention of AqBanking is to provide a middle layer between the
program and the various Online Banking libraries (e.g. AqHBCI). The
first backend which is already supported is AqHBCI, a library which
implements a client for the German HBCI (Home Banking Computer
Interface) protocol. Additionally, Aqbanking provides various plugins
to simplify import and export of financial data. Currently there are
import plugins for the following formats: DTAUS (German financial
format), SWIFT (MT940 and MT942).

Thanks for the suggestion, but from what I gather it aqbanking
probably won't facilitate a means to get an official bank statement in
PDF or the like. Correct?

It's not just the balance that I need. My primary focus is to
actually get the statement -- the one my banks all currently force me
to login to retrieve (after viewing their ads, of course).

What you want probably is this:
http://freecode.com/projects/aqbanking-cli
or another cli hbci client.

What you get by way of HBCI transfer is "official".
you can upload transfer statements
and download the list of activities. ( vulgo bank statements )

Looks like a good option. But HBCI is used purely by German banks,
according to Message-ID: <201001181526.1...@gmx.de>.

Has that changed?

Probably not. Banking is one of those industries where the incumbents
approach to standardization is to use a megaphone to tell everyone else
to change their approach to the one the megaphone-user has implemented,
all while furiously stuffing ones ears full of wax to block out the
horrible din coming from all the other megaphones. Occasionally a
standard gets promulgated, but it's rare and often all-too-limited in
scope. Expect each country to have their own standard (where there has
been any standardization at all). Don't be overly surprised if it costs
a lot of money to even read the standard. Be aware that things like this
have been actively pursued as part of strategies to discourage unwanted
takeover offers by foreign banks, so that even where a takeover happens,
no actual consolidation can occur due to the overhang of existing
customers using obsolete protocols.

Banks: you've got to admire the evilness sometimes.

I know this is an old thread, but I was also looking for a solution to this. I was hoping Mint.com would have an API I could use, but it does not (not a free one anyways). And I hoped I could find a Google Script that would scrape my finances either from the bank directly or from Mint.

I just came across the below Google Script, and thought others might find it useful. I'm hoping someone with more programming experience than myself can take a look at it and confirm that it is safe (looks good from what I can tell).

Props to the dev, because this looks like a great tool at first glance.
