I'm trying to install ActiveTcl 8.4.16 on Vista,
but it won't let me "Install for all users"--the
button is disabled--despite that fact that
the account I'm using is an administrator.
I'm getting a bit annoyed at Vista: things are
in slightly different places and all those
"Is it ok to run?" prompts.
Thanks,
Keith
The fact that you use an administrator account does not mean that you
are running program with administrator priveledges.
You must right-click on the setup file, and select "Run as Administrator"...
PS: The ActiveTcl setup fails to create the correct folders in the start
menu. You will end with 2 folders:
"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\ActiveState
ActiveTcl 8.4.16.0" &
"C:\Users\George\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs\ActiveState ActiveTcl 8.4.16.0 - transient"
The tcl/tk stuff will be in the - transient folder - the first one will
be empty :-)
Besides this, everything is as expected :-)
About vista: you are absolute right... And if you are new to them, wait
to discover the first windows explorer (file manager) bugs :-)
PS: Tile included in ActiveTcl 8.4.16.0 does not use the native theme
under vista...

Ah ... the vista for Vista isn't pretty. What they have done to sandbox
users is quite perplexing - both to developers and end users. It varies
also with whether you have 64-bit Vista or not, as well as certain
levels of "admin". There is a difference between the real admin account
and users with "admin" permission. I'm not sure that all of the factors
have been taken into account yet for ActiveTcl's installer. It is
supposed to do a check that determines whether true "admin" access is
available. Please log a bug at http://bugs.activestate.com/ and we will
follow up.
