i am at a loss as to which book to get. i need something that covers
tcl7.6 and tk4.2 (and ideally tcl8.0/tk8.0 as i will move on to 8.0
in the future when i can persuade the sysop here to install it) and
covers things like tclX which i have installed but know nothing about.

can somebody make a recommendation, please?

thanks

matthew

I've just started work for a new company (royalblue technologies plc), and TCL is one of the languages I'm having to learn. We use TCL version 8.0. The book they gave me to read is

"Tcl and the Tk Toolkit" by John K. Ousterhout
pub : Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series
ISBN 0-201-63337-X

John Ousterhout is the original designer of the language, so he should know his stuff.

I realise I haven't actualy said the book covers version 8.0. I'm afraid I'm too new to be able determine that. Anyway, check it out. It looks good.

As the author of one of the books, I'm biased. The three main
books that introduce Tcl/Tk are listed on my Web page (near
the bottom):

http://www.pconline.com/~erc/tcl.htm

Hope this helps,

"... having to learn"? They pay you, *and*
they give you books, and you take it as,
"... having to learn"?!?? When I was walk-

and reciting my lessons, I was *thankful*
that . . . Whoops! wrong speech.

He does indeed know his stuff.

It doesn't. It doesn't even cover 7.6. In
fact, it doesn't cover 7.5, or 7.4.

The conclusion still obtains, though: it *is*
good.

The two books in print that most prominently
cover 8.0 are by Johnson and Welch. See <URL:

for details.

You need to get at least two books:

Brent Welch's "Practical Programming in Tcl and Tk"
and
Tcl/Tk Tools by Mark Harison et al

Ousterhout wrote a fine book, but Tcl/Tk has changed so much since its
publication that IMHO you should _not_ rely on it to learn how to use V8.0.
After learning from that book plus the manual pages, I recently bought the
second edition of the Welch book, which covers V8.0 but contains appendices
describing the differences from previous versions of the software. I now
realize to my chagrin that I wasted the better part of a week implementing
some behavior which I could have gotten instantly with the grid geometry
manager--except that I didn't previously realize that it even existed.
