Hi! I am a LINUX Newbie and trying to run some tcl/tk scripts. But some stop
with a error message like "invalid command option" or "invalid command wm". I
can locate these lines in the source, but it really seems that the author has
meant it this way ;-)

I have tcl 8.0. Do I have an incomplete installation of tcl/tk? Don´t these
commands belong to standard tcl/tk, so that I would have to install an
extension? Which one?

Thanks for your help!

Oliver

It would help to see "these lines in the source" - I usually get
that kind of error when I forget a backslash at the end
of a line (or if there is one where it shouldn't be!)

Hope this helps...

These commands are part of Tk, the core widget extension to Tcl. You
have to make sure the script is run under wish (windowing shell) and not
tclsh (Tcl shell). Wish is Tcl+Tk.

Do you have Tk also? How are you running the script? Add the following line
close to the beginning of your script:

package require Tk 8.0

If you get an error, then your installation is incomplete. Try to run the
command wish8.0. That's the interpreter to use if your script has a GUI.

Hmpf. I惴 very embarrassed - that愀 it. No need to say that I惴 a newbie, hm?

But I have still another one:
Tkmc (It愀 tkmc-4_1_33-2_m68k.rpm which came with my RedHat) does not run
either. When I try to start it, it starts telling a cruel story (child killed)
;-) and afterwards dies itself.

Does anybody know about this one?
How can I localise the error to provide a better description?

Hmmm... That seems to be an old version of mc (Midnight Commander). I know
that in the old days, Miguel (the author) had always stated that tkmc was in
pre-alpha state or something. It didn't work like he wanted it to so that may
be your problem. Or, maybe you need to install mc. Anyway, the latest version
of mc is 4.5.???. You can usually find the latest version at
ftp://ftp.gnome.org/ somewhere. Since development has been mostly centered on
gtk (mc is part of the GNOME project), the tk portion may have been left to
linger.
