============================================================

The Tcl Dallas User's Group is proud to announce our second guest speaking
event with George A. Howlett, author of the BLT extension. George will
be presenting "Building Applications with BLT" on May 9th at 7:00PM.
Refreshments and registration will begin at 6:30PM. For further directions
please see the map below or our web page http://www.tcltk.com/TclDallas.
We would appreciate it if potential attendees could drop us a note at
mulf...@spd.dsccc.com, so we could get a rough head count.

George Howlett is an influential and vocal leader in Tcl community. His
talk will present a brief overview of the commands and utilities contained
in BLT, and demonstrate some of the finer points of BLT in building
applications. George will also describe some of the current works-in-progress,
and discuss BLT's future directions: new widgets, Windows ports, etc.

From writing even the simplest Tcl/Tk program, it's easily apparent that
applications can be developed with amazing speed; what formerly took weeks,
can now be done in hours. Tcl, like other very high-level languages, raises
the level of programming to a simpler form. With other languages software
developers face a "wall" when they have exhausted the core capabilities of
the toolkit. But, Tcl/Tk was designed from the start to be extensible.
New widgets and capabilities can be added by attaching a little bit of C code.

The BLT extension is a collection of widgets and utilities which represent
some of the various "walls" George has faced when developing Tcl/Tk
applications. Graphing is ubiquitous in scientific applications and using
the canvas to plot data is unwieldy. So BLT contains interactive X-Y and
bar graph widgets. He has found there are layouts that the Tk packer cannot
handle, so BLT contains a geometry manager with a table-based layout model.
Also, the BLT "bgexec" and "busy" commands let you easily create wrappers
for your old non-graphical tools. Other widgets and commands include a
powerful drag and drop mechanism and a hypertext widget.

George A. Howlett received his degree in Computer Science from the
University at Buffalo. He is currently a Member of Technical Staff at AT&T
Bell Laboratories where he develops software for Electronic Computer Aided
Design (ECAD) supporting IC chip designs. Since first introduced to Tcl in
1989, he has incorporated Tcl and Tk into many ECAD tools and applications
and has been an ardent Tcl/Tk supporter. He has written several extensions
to Tcl and Tk, including BLT, to support his own Tcl/Tk programming efforts.
