A while back, I started calling the language being built by the GNU Project
GEL. It turns out that GEL is a trademark of Sybase Inc. Therefore,
we must choose a new name. Please do not refer to the GNU language
as GEL.

My favorite proposed name, posted recently to comp.lang.scheme, is GUILE.
I like the name, because i think programmers should be encouraged to use
GUILE when writing programs. The name may change yet again; but for now,
please refer to the GNU language as GUILE.

If you would like to volunteer to help with the GNU extension language
project, please write to lo...@gnu.ai.mit.edu.

GEL was good since

1. it was short

2. it had an obvious meaning "GNU Extension Language"

3. its meaning as a word by itself was fairly suitable

What about GXL ("GNU eXtension Language")?

1 and 2 still holds.
3 can be regarded as compensated since XL is pronounced "excel".

How about GNL : GNL is Not a Language?

Maybe not such a good idea if it complies with neither R4RS nor IEEE.

Anyway, the name is mainly a product name.

Good one! I second Ioi's proposal of GNL, until such time that it becomes
availble at which time an appropriate name might more appropriately be
decided 8^).

Well, an acronym isn't needed at all. Much of the computer
industry is moving into using marketable names that have
nothing to do with the product - sort of like automobile
names. For instance, OpenView, Solaris, Quicken, etc.
Heck, even UNIX doesn't mean anything, except for being
a pun on Multics.

Of course, personally, I like acronyms, since they have
a bit more thought behind them, but puns or reasonably
accurate descriptive terms are ok ("Integra" not being
one of them).
