ps2pdf fails on converting large .ps file

Hello. I am compiling a dissertation and am experiencing an error when I include too much content. Once I have created the .dvi, I can use

dvips dissertation_publication.dvi

to create the .ps file. However, I am unable to convert the 83MB .ps to a .pdf file. I am using the command

ps2pdf dissertation_publication.ps

and get the following error:

83MB dissertation! Too much content indeed. But what kind of content? Do
you have many high-resolution images? Many bitmapped fonts? What is the
output of dvips?

For comparison, I have a 300 page textbook and its size is less than 2
MB. And a two-volume collection of papers (650 pages in total) is less
than 4MB.

I am not getting any errors from Latex when I compile .tex to .dvi.


I am able to compile .tex to .dvi to .pdf when I include a few chapters at a time. However, the problem occurs when I include all chapters.

There are a few 10MB high resolution .eps figures and more 1MB .eps figures.

I'm not doing anything special with fonts.

I was able to sucessfully create the .pdf from the .ps using Acrobat Distiller. Thus the problem is isolated to ps2pdf

My OS is Ubuntu.

Well if it's a matter of meeting an imminent deadline, you can merge
the separate pdf files using, for example, pdftk, or similar.

But please answer the questions I asked in a previous response. There
must be some reason why your .ps is so huge.

For the record: off-list it was determined that these large image files
could easily be converted to relatively high-resolution (but much
smaller) png images using the convert tool of ImageMagick, and the
document could then be compiled directly to pdf using pdflatex. Only the
scaling factors in the source document will need to be adjusted.

So your document includes a 'pdfmark' operator, and one of the arguments
being supplied is out of the valid range. pdfmark is an extension
operator which is only used to create PDF files, it is usually added to
create 'metadata' like bookmarks.

Normally I'd suggest that a Count of -1 is probably the problem.
However, the 'OUT' tells me this is an outline (bookmark), and negative
values are permitted (the outline node is closed, hiding the children,
when the file is opened)

To figure out the actual problem I'd need to see a file which fails (and
I don't really want to download an 83Mb file.

At the moment I would guess that there is something wrong with the
pdfmark, but you could try upgrading to a newer version of Ghostscript,
8.71 is 2 years old now. If that fails you could open a bug report at
http://bugs.ghostscript.com, attaching the smallest file you can make
which exhibits the problem.
