Since the future of our ability to link the pop-forum list to the
comp.lang.pop news group here in Birmingham is in doubt, I have
set up an alternative route to the world via gmane:
http://gmane.org/

It is mainly a hosting site for email lists concerned with free
software.

It now has a list

which is linked with the pop-forum email list.

It can also be used as a news group of you prefer to use news rather
than mail to access the list.

If anyone spots a message posted to comp.lang.pop which looks as if
it needs attention, please feel free either to email it to

pop-...@cs.bham.ac.uk
[Warning this has anti-spam settings, so if you are not on the
pop-forum list, the message will have to be approved.]

or post it to the newsgroup

gmane.comp.ide.pop.general

if you are not already registered at gmane you will be sent a
message to which you need to reply to confirm that you are a real
poster. Only then will your message go. You'l get instructions on
how to register yourself as a poster to gmae.

In addition anyone can now read and post both mail and news to
pop-forum via this new location, though you will be asked to
register first.

http://dir.gmane.org/gmane.comp.ide.pop.general
nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.ide.pop.general

[I did not choose the name of the list.]

Archives can be read there in a web browser (in different formats
listed there), or accessed in other ways, using the http: address.

If you wish to use an NNTP newsreader/poster, use this address for
your NNTP server:

news.gmane.org

and select this group

gmane.comp.ide.pop.general

I.e. use nntp://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.ide.pop.general

If you wish to post by email, you can post to

pop-...@cs.bham.ac.uk

(Please post only from an address at which you registered on the
pop-forum list otherwise your message may be blocked or delayed.)

If you post to gmane via news, you must include an email address (in
your From: line) which will be used to check your authenticity.

You will be sent a message and asked to reply. After your reply is
received the message will be forwarded. This this stops some sorts
of mass mailing but will not stop all spammers. The pop-forum list
will do its own filtering.

Find out more about gmane at:

How it deals with posters

http://gmane.org/

In pop-11 in order to use ved_gn and ved_postnews, I use

uses ved_gn; ;;; to compile the Ved news interface.

'news.gmane.org' -> systranslate('NNTPSERVER')

gn_reset_connection();

Then ENTER gn can be used to get news, and ENTER postnews can
be used to post news. ENTER followup can be used to prepare
a reply. Details are in these help files (which need to be
made accessible by 'uses ved_gn):

HELP ved_gn
HELP ved_postnews

I shall later change the information in here:
