I've never thought of creating a new OS before, but here's what I need :
- Os/2 (warp), Windows (95/NT/etc) and Unix compatibility
- Better (intuitial) interface than win3.1 (that still sux)
- Internet support
- Encrypting (parts) of my filedir, with a good chance of the coppers _never_
getting their filthy hands on my data.
- Fast, Ultra-fast multitasking
- Not too much memory demands (I can live with 12 meg demand, but then it
should work perfectly on a 486 dx2 66.)
- Built in programming language, quick enough to learn when you're already
familliar with pascal/C (object)

These are just the things I've come up with in about 3 minutes....
Here's my request : _Please_ make a maillist for progress reports. I'd be
willing to help you code some stuff, It sounds pretty cool to me.

The whole idea of a operating system made for programmers, kindda
"underground" at first (try beating ibm and micro$oft), sounds very relaxed....

I too have thought about this before. It seems to me that there are problems
in every major OS available currently. What are you planning on writing it
in? Would you be looking for help?

To your question - here is what i would like to see in an OS

- good, fast multitasking
- file permissions (like unix) and encryption built in
- the shell / command line level of the os should be much more
powerful than available today -- shell scripts / batch files are
a joke. The command interpreter should be more like a language...
+ support typed variables
+ easier interface for variables
+ complex program control structures
+ integrated directory functions...
etc...

moreover, for it to be truly successful:

- must be able to run PS (DOS, WINDOWS, OS/2) junk... along with NT
- should have good ansi compilers written for it so that unix source
could be ported with some work...
- maybe have an integrated GUI interface like a mac (but still have the
character based windows, like xterm -- with the powerful command interp
as above...)
- be internet compatable, SLIP, PPP, TCP/IP, NNTP, SNMP...
- be able to run on a variety of arch...
