Hi guys! I'm John Merritt from Atlanta, GA. I have been programming
in MUMPS for over 20 years in the healthcare industry.

I recently got laid off from a pretty sweet job, where I was
supporting a MUMPS-based medical laboratory billing system at numerous
sites around the country, working from home. I've only been actively
searching the job market for a few weeks now, but I'm already getting
a bit discouraged with what I've managed to find out about the current
opportunities for MUMPS/CACHE programmers.

To be sure, there are still some openings out there - but so far,
they're either in another part of the country (or the world), or they
also require experience with a whole additional alphabet-soup of other
languages or applications.

So my primary question is - do you guys know of, or know a good place
to find out, which companies still have successful MUMPS-based
products, or perhaps just use a large M-based app, but are large
enough to have their own internal IT support for it? Obviously,
information about specific current job openings would be great, but
I’m primarily hoping you guys might have first-hand knowledge of who's
still using MUMPS programmers, so that perhaps I could submit a resume
for future consideration, and add them to my search list, even if they
don't have any current openings.

Any info, suggestions or ideas you have will be most welcome –
particularly if anyone knows of any active MUMPS shops in the greater
Atlanta area, or ones elsewhere that routinely hire people to work
remotely.

Thanks,
John

Wow, I'm pretty surprised to hear this...I get pinged at least once a
day for various opportunities, mostly on-site supporting Epic, (old)
IDX or Mysis(Antrim)(I can't keep up with the name changes). However
I do occasionally get offers for 100% remote work, probably 2 or 3
times a month. I work remotely now supporting an IDX install in
California from Seattle.

definitive list anywhere. Are you looking for an organization that
has a large M/Cache based app deployed and needs to support it, or are
you more interested in working for a vendor that supplies them?

In general you'll want to stay looking at Healthcare. Ameritrade was
hiring a group of programmers 6 to 12 months ago, but that stood out
for me because it wasn't healthcare. Quest Diagnostics had some
openings last I looked and I know of at least one programmer who works
for the LA team remotely. Also, that's lab stuff so right up your
ally.

In general I'd say put your resume on Monster, http://www.cacheskills.com/
and get the google-bot to crawl it somehow. Get on LinkedIn and check
out the vendor/recruiter pages, they send out a weekly listing of
openings which you can cherry-pick.

Forget about the alphabet soup of applications and languages. Most of
these jobs are posted by HR generalists who have no idea what to ask
for. I've seen Epic Cache Sys Admin positions that "require" Oracle
and Java experience. Mostly it's HR folks asking traditional IT
managers what to include in the job post. Since M is like a DB, ask
for Oracle skills right?

Good Luck!
