The first step after installing KoboCollect on your device is to set up theserver URL, Username, and Password, which connects yourKoboCollect app to the KoboToolbox server. This allows you to downloaddeployed forms from KoboToolbox to your mobile device and also send datacollected through the app back to the server.

You will now be asked to input the URL, Username, and Password, and then select Add. For the URL, you must select from the twoKoboToolbox servers. If you created your user account on the GlobalServer, the URL is If your user account is onthe European Union Server, the URL is -eu.kobotoolbox.org.

You can use KoboCollect to get blank forms to your device, collect data(fill blank forms), store it in your device, edit the filled in forms (editsaved forms), submit saved forms, and delete filled in forms/blank forms.

Once you have blank form(s) in the app, you no longer require an internetconnection to collect data. The blank forms and the filled in forms will stay onthe device until you delete them from the app or submit them to the server.

Once you have completed data collection for your survey project and all thefilled in forms have been uploaded to the server, it is recommended to deletethe forms from the KoboCollect app. Keeping them in the app can confuseinterviewers while collecting data for a different project. Follow the stepsoutlined below to delete Saved Forms and Blank Forms from your app.

Users should now see two tabs. The default is Saved Forms. These are theforms filled in during data collection. Press Select All to delete allthe Saved Forms from the app and then Delete Selected.

When you submit all the filled forms to the server by pressing Send FinalizedForm, the successfully submitted forms can be seen in the View Sent Formsection. Data managers generally advise to keep this information until the endof the project as it always provides a reference for the total number ofcollections and submissions.

Users can set up the collection of metadata like username, phone number andemail address in KoboCollect, providing additional details on whosubmitted the records to the server. These details can be helpful to validatethe quality of the data collected by the team.

KoboCollect is a forkof ODK Collect. As of today, there are no substantive differences betweenthe two apps. Users are free to use either one for data collection. KoboToolboxis fully compatible with both apps.

Historically, there were several significant differences between the two. Backin 2009, KoboToolbox made several changes to ODK Collect, creatingKoboCollect, such as cascading questions, hiding delete, and editbuttons for field data collection. The XLSForm was not yet an option inODK Collect and KoboToolbox had built a formbuilder for all questiontypes and advanced settings, including cascading questions, which were saveddirectly as an XML file for the mobile app. These changes were eventuallyincorporated into ODK Collect, along with many other great features. In2014, KoboToolbox decided to fork ODK Collect to create thenew KoboCollect, with minimal changes, including the KoboToolbox server in the configuration dropdown, a referenceback to ODK Collect, and the KoboToolbox logo and name.

Due to changes in our organization and the sampling strategy, I needed to change some of the choices for some questions in the forms (not the questions - no questions were changed, deleted, or added). I made the changes and then redeployed the forms. Now the enumerator team will restart their data collection in a few weeks.

I have created a Kobotoolbox account and set up a questionnaire for data collection. I aim to collect data offline and to this end, have downloaded the Kobotoolbox app and logged in via my account. However, the questionnaire is not loading on the app. Does anybody know how to solve this issue?

I new to Kobotool but I really wanted to know if I can feed my SQL database with the data I am collecting using kobo. If I understand kobo collect the data and put it in a giant excel sheet. Then the person who collected the data have no access to the data he collected anymore in case he wanted to edit some. Kindly give me some idea on this.

Hi Biniam

Yes basically when the person collects data and submits the data you are not able to send it back to the person to edit it; the editing has to be done before the data is submitted. This is in the standard procedure for using KOBO. However there are different interfaces for submission of data that you can look at that allows for submission via clouding linkages while still using KOBO. KOBO does not however offer support on systems that are third party and as such does not offer guarantee that the systems will work.

Kobo Toolbox provides a good platform to collect data using two devices: your laptop and your mobile devices e.g. smartphones and tablets. On this module, we will talk about how to use your Kobo Collect forms on your devices. Kobo Collect is the android-based application used to collect the data which feeds into your Kobo Toolbox account. Just like other ODK interfaces, Kobo Collect can be easily installed on your phones using Google Play.

Grid-theme style:

Enketo

oThis style will display correctly in Enketo.

KoboCollect

oAlthough you can build your survey forms in KoBoToolbox with grid-theme style you are not able to collect data using the same format in KoBoCollect

I am looking into subscribing to kobo unlimited, but data privacy is important to me. It has been hard to find information on what data Kobo collects off of ereaders in order for me to properly assess risk. I know they pay authors (via kobo unlimited) based on time spent by readers reading their books so obviously they are collecting information based on what is downloaded on the kobo, what is actively being read, and the time spent actively reading it. I assume all that information goes back to them at every sync.

Is there a possibility of displaying existing polygon shapes from geojson file in kobo collect APP?

I have working version with points geojson file which is helpful but I need to show the existing polygons on map to avoid the overlap or duplication while mapping/geoshape the farmers new land parcels.

one more attempt I tried with mbtiles of existing polygons, this works but its a lot of repetitive work at short time interval.

However there are slight differences with some functions when using the KoBoCollect and the Enketo while collecting data. For reference please see the details here.

So, is this duplicate thing due to a bad network? Eventually, the forms are successfully submitted! Or, is it an issue with the data collector, perhaps, not using KoboCollect correctly. We did provide training a few days ago.

We used KoBo Collect and KoBo Toolbox as an electronic data capture platform for a dog population and rabies knowledge and practices community survey in the Philippines. It has allowed for easy design and deployment of an electronic form with minimal technical knowledge from the investigators. Using this platform allowed for shorter training for data collectors, minimal errors during data collection, and faster turn-around time for data cleaning and analysis.

I read the documentation for both enabling row-level permissions and setting up and collecting data using kobo collect and have done everything as instructed *

First thing one of the users with access noticed is that when The first entered the URL as follows //kc.kobotoolbox.org, they encountered an error while trying to access the form saying that the server required authentification

When they incorporated /username in the password to be //kc.kobotoolbox.org/santaclaus**, they were able to access the form list, but there was nothing to display

Many organisations in the humanitarian and development sector are using data collection and management tools like KoBo Toolbox. With its offline feature, KoBo Toolbox allows users to collect and store data offline, which comes in handy in challenging environments and demanding contexts.

But the journey of your data does not end there. Your data has to be linked to indicators and results framework for deeper analysis and to ultimately inform your decision-making process. This is where TolaData comes in. TolaData is a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation (M&E) platform. Our versatile toolkit including a form builder feature, as well as integration functionality with 3rd party tools such as KoBo Toolbox, makes data collection, analysis and reporting easy and effective.

When using Kobo Toolbox, you can collect data through computers or mobile phones which is stored online. The tool can be accessed through the weblink option or installed on a local server. It is a widely used tool and has an active, dynamic user and collaborator community. The app gives you access to survey forms which can also be used for your data collection. There are two options for data collection, Kobo Collect and Enketo Webform and these are dependent on the recommended device. For example, Kobo Collect run on any Android device (Phone/Tablet) only, whereas Webform runs on any device (including Apple iOS and laptop).
