Hi,

Can anyone help me in finding the logic that defines the number of the first
week of the year. For example, sometimes the 1st week is called week 53
(like in this year) and week number one starts on January 4.
So what is the rule behind the calculation of the week's number.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not aware of any universal definition of a "week number". If you
have a source of examples for prior years you should be able to figure
it out empericly.

If the past data is inconsistant then just make up a rule like "the
week with the first Monday is week one". If someone challenges it
just say "Here's my definition, what's yours?"

The ISO definition (I can't find the appropriate RFC right now) defines it
as the first week that has four days in it. Thus as the week starts with
monday (in Europe that is) it is the week that has the Thursday in it.

I understand that there's an ISO standard on the subject, but since I'm
off-line I can't find it right now.

I believe, but not with a very high confidence, that Week 1 of a year is the
one that contains the first Thursday.

Now the next question is on which day of the week a week starts...

Hi Marc,

The number of the first week belongs to the year the most of their days are
in.
