Subject: announcement: open sourcing of MCL kernel and compiler

Digitool is pleased to announce the open sourcing of MCL's kernel and
compiler.

The MCL "kernel and compiler" will become available as opensource
under the Lesser GNU Public License (LGPL). The opensource project
will be maintained and overseen by Gary Byers at
http://www.clozure.com/openmcl. The opensourcing of the MCL kernel
and compiler compiler will mean, for example, that interested parties
can port MCL to platforms other than the Macintosh running MacOS --
such as LinuxPPC -- and that products developed with MCL under MacOS
could be ported to the opensource version of MCL and delivered on
other platforms.

Note that the LGPL does not require that applications which use the
"library" provided by opensourced MCL to themselves be opensourced.

The LGPL does not extend to other parts of MCL, such as its window system.
