Save /unchanged variable?

I'm looking for the varible that stores the saved / not saved info.
When I switch from dwg to dwg via my dwg-manager I sometimes forget to
save! I whant to add an 'IF' statement to the switching procedure
inorder to prevent opening an other dwg and not saving first.
Ofcourse I don't want to save the opened dwg's all the time, because
back-uping would take too long a time and too much data!
