I came across ftp://ftp.di.unipi.it/pub/lang/lisp where the README file
says "This is ECoLisp (ECL), an Embeddable Common Lisp implementation".
Is this different than ECL i.e. http://ecls.sourceforge.net ? If yes
does anyone have experience with the former ?

There a great difference. ECoLisp is the old old predecessor of ECLS
and is now obsolete.
