Free 3d modeling programs for java3d??

Just slap me if I've missed the obvious here, but what freeware 3d
modeling software can I use to create Java3D objects? I use Linux
exclusively and wish to create a 3D landscape with static, computer
controlled, and user controlled objects.

While I'm on this subject, my first goal is to create a very simple
world and test performance from a proof of concept view. I am new to
Java and Java3d so any advice is welcome. This project is
non-commercial so while devoting time is the plan, plunking down cash is
not.

there are free java3d loaders for many modelers...for example 3dstudio,
lightwave, VRML and more...
the java3d package comes with a lightwave .obj loader...

Thanks for the pointer. While I have found many free modelers I had not
found anything that would save them as a .obj or .lws file (for the two
loaders that came with J3D). I guess I can quit looking for something
to convert to a .obj file and instead find a loader that will do what I
want.
