RATIONALE: comp.lang.java.server-side

Java is widely used in server-side technology, and is expanding.
Currently there is no specific group to discuss server-side issues.
This discourages some people from using Usenet as a medium for
discussion of this area, causes others to cross/multi-post
throughout the comp.lang.java.* groups, and means that newcomers
have no obvious place to search for relevant answers or discussions.

In addition, much current discussion of server-side Java is driven
off of Usenet to fragmented mailing lists and web-based forums. For
example, the Tomcat mailing lists and JavaRanch forums are frequently
recommended to newcomers within the comp.lang.java.* hierarchy asking
about server-side topics, due to the lack of relevant forums within
Usenet.

The proposed group will serve to allow discussion of server-side
technologies and APIs, including but not limited to: servlets;
JavaServer Pages (JSP); servlet-based technologies such as Velocity,
Tapestry, and WebMacro; Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB); and server-side
application frameworks such as Struts and Enhydra. It will also
provide a central place to provide advice on which existing technology
may be most appropriate for a given task, and to discuss generic
server-side techniques.

As a sample of use, a Google search across existing comp.lang.java.*
newsgroups for the 90-day period beginning February 6, 2003 and
ending May 5th, 2003, matching posts containing common server-side
Java technologies, terms, and vendors (*) found 5,090 posts. A scan
through the subject lines of the most recent 100 matching posts
showed that around three quarters of them would be appropriate in
the proposed new group. Nearly all posts in the search results
were on-topic in the proposed new group, but about one quarter of
them would be more appropriate to existing specialty groups such
as comp.lang.java.corba, comp.lang.java.databases, and
comp.lang.java.advocacy.

(*) The search terms used were "jsp", "servlet", "tomcat", "j2ee",
"ejb", "struts", "jboss", "websphere", and "soap".

CHARTER: comp.lang.java.server-side

An unmoderated newsgroup for discussing the use of Java in
server-side applications and of technologies and APIs useful for
server-side Java programming.

Examples of welcome topics include:

o Problems and discussions involving Java-based server-side
technologies, APIs, and frameworks (for example, EJBs, servlets,
JSPs, Tapestry, or Velocity) that are not covered by more specific
groups.
o Problems and discussions involving the application of general-
purpose server-side technologies to the Java programming language
(for example, XML/SOAP-based APIs, JMS integration issues).
o Comparisons between, discussions about, and problems involving
different server-side technologies in the context of Java software
development, including issues of installation and configuration.
o Comparisons between, discussions about, and problems involving
different vendors' or groups' implementations of server-side
technologies in the context of Java software development.
o Comparisons of the usefulness of different technologies to
approach to a given problem, even if those technologies are
each covered by more specific groups.
o Discussion of generic server-side problems such as load-balancing.

Examples of inappropriate topics include:

o Discussion of or problems in the use of a specific technology
which is covered by a separate group. (Use the specific group.)
o Problems which aren't server-specific but which happen to occur
in the use of a server-side application. (eg for general threading
problems, post in comp.lang.java.programmer)

Binaries are discouraged, except for PGP signatures and similar
small binaries.

Please try to keep any sections of source code you post as short as
possible, preferably within two screenfuls. If you are demonstrating
a problem and can write a short, self-contained piece of code which
others can compile, you are more likely to receive an answer. If you
need to supply more code than this, it is usually worth putting it
on a web-site temporarily and posting a link.

Unless a posting has non-server-side issues, please avoid
cross-posting to other groups such as comp.lang.java.programmer.

Relevant commercial posts are acceptable, but should be limited to
one per month per product.

END CHARTER.
