setting up Java and Netbeans in Linux

I have installed the Java/Netbeans combo. Everything seems to be ok
except that if I bring java files into netbeans and try to complile
them and run them, they are unable to see the other classes that are
in the same directory. This works fine in Windows XP. What is the
problem in Linux? I put the java bin directory in the path but this
did not solve the problem. Any help would be appreciated.
