Can someone remind me how to create a link to a particular thread in Google
Groups? I used to know how to do it long ago but haven't done it in ages
and never wrote it down....

I tried to find it in Google itself but I came up empty; I thought that
"refer to Google Groups thread" was a reasonable search but it didn't find
what I wanted....

Thanks for your speedy reply but that's not quite what I had in mind. I'm
trying to find a way to create a URL that points to a specific thread
within Google groups. For example, I started a thread there on March 15
entitled "Design Question" and I'd like to be able to provide a URL that
I could post in a newsgroup like this that takes people directly to the
start of that thread.

I realize that I could give them the date, title and/or authorname so
that they could find the thread via an Advanced Search but I'm sure there
is a way to get a direct URL; I just don't remember what it is.

a search for comp.lang.java.programmer take me to

"Active older topics" has a link to your thread, "Design Questions about
static factory classes":

I did what you suggested and got as far as seeing "Active Older Topics"
(small area over on the right in the center) but there were only three
topics listed, none of which was the one I wanted. There was also no
obvious way to scroll through down to see more. I probably could have
just kept clicking the "Older" link down at the bottom but I would have
had to scroll a lot of timees to get to the one I wanted. Did I
misunderstand your instructions?

The good news is that I found what I wanted a different way. The Advanced
Google Groups search page has a special search box at the bottom that
lets you input a Message-ID. I realized that is the name of the thing I
want. I did a fresh search on "Google message-id" and found instructions
on how to get the messsage-ID for any message: just go to the message
itself, click on "Show Original" and look for the Message-ID field in the
header, roughly in the middle. In my case, that is
Xns9D3CA11E0D2F4no...@202.177.16.121.

If I then go to the Groups Advanced Search page at
http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=& and plug in the message-ID
in the very bottom search box, it takes me directly to my post.

That could be very handy in giving people references to past threads so
I'm including all the information here in case it helps anyone else down
the road.

The bad news is that the message id is not very useful if you want to be
taken directly to the thread without firing up Google Groups first. You
need a complete URL.

Agreed. That's why John's method looked promising. But I must have made
some kind of bad assumption in trying it because I didn't get what he
said I'd get. I just can't think of what I did wrong so maybe he could
clarify/elaborate just a bit....

I see about a dozen "Active older topics," but it seem me as logged into
a gmail account. That may explain the UI disparity.

I speculated about login up-thread.

Another useful technique is clicking "More options" then "individual
message," which produces a link to a single post instead of the entire
thread:
