Java Registry Key problem (CurrentVersion) ?

When running any of my java programs I get the message :
Failed reading value of registry key:
Software\JavaSoft\Java Runtime Environment\CurrentVersion
The only thing I can think that I've done since the last successful
execution is some Visual C++ development, but certainly no direct
registry manipulation.
Any ideas?

Check the registry, if the Key is present and it point to the correct value.
This could also be a generical problem in the Registry (make a backup).
