a) Don't change it just to change it. That's not polite. It is polite to
change it, if your post has no relation to the message you replied to.
I.e., a completely different topic, or your original topic. ;-)
b) You can't change the subject lines on other people's Usenet messages.
That's their message. That's their subject line. That's the way it was
sent. That's the way it is archived.
c) For your messages, you just change the subject line in your newsreader.
That's if you're posting to Usenet via a Usenet newsreader. You seem to be
posting to Usenet via Google Groups. This is not a Google Group.
Let's see if you can change the subject line. On a new message, the subject
line should be blank and you fill it in. Yes? You've done so. On a reply
message, the subject line should be filled in, but be editable. So, start a
reply to your first message in this thread. Is the "Subject:" line
displayed on the reply? It should say:
"Re: this is how you change the subject line"
Is the subject line editable in the reply? Can you add or delete
characters? If so, change it to what you want. It's that simple, or should
be. If not, complain to Google Groups. They've disabled changing the reply
line subject or not implemented it.
Sometimes, people reference the old topic when changing it. To do that one
places "Re: <new subject>" followed by ", was [" + "<old subject line>" +
"]". Then, you send your reply. The messages are linked together by
numbers in the Usenet message header.
E.g., I changed the subject line on this reply to:
Re: this is how you change the subject line, was [Re: how do I change the
subject of a discussion?]
