Is this something that GnuCOBOL does?

I'm not asking for it. I just stumbled over the posting on r/cobol

I haven't tried it yet, but it's been in the GnuCOBOL Programmer's Guide
since November 2020 at release 3.1.1.
The current stable release is 3.1.2, and we're expecting GnuCOBOL 3.2
release candidate 1 within the next few weeks.
You can download the manuals from here (watch out for URL wrap):
https://sourceforge.net/p/gnucobol/code/HEAD/tree/external-doc/guide/PDFs/
Kind regards,
