Dear friends of Tom Rettig,
We wanted to post a message so that people would not here about this
second hand. Last night, our father passed away. We are not certain of
the cause, but it happened in his home as he was getting ready for bed.
There is no indication of foul play or of suicide. He had experienced a
somewhat serious problem with his kidney back in December which required
him to go to the hospital. While we are not sure what the cause of his
death may have been, we suspect there is a relationship to this kidney
problem.
We know that our father had many friends in the computer industry and
that you share our sadness with his death. He was a beautiful man who
greatly valued his family, friends and colleagues. He has left behind a
wonderful collection of movies, TV shows, software and memories for all
of us to remember him by. He will be sadly missed by so many of us.
Needless to say the sudden and unexpected nature of his death is deeply
saddening and disorienting. Your kind thoughts and prayers for him are
greatly appreciated at this time. We would ask that you give us a
couple of weeks to sort through his life and our emotions before trying
to contact us. We will send additional messages during that time as we
find out more.
Love and peace,
Tom and Deane Rettig

he'll come back as a teen.

Couldn't believe this! Although did not see his name for quite a long
time, but still remember his "Dedication" in the book "Advanced
programmer's guide" he co-authored 11 years ago,
To Wayne Ratliff and Jeb Long, who gave it life; in memory of
George Tate, who gave it to the world; and to dBASE programmers
everywhere, who continue to give it meaning, purpose, and direction.
dBase has evolved into different powerful dialects, but I still
remember his program coded in the pure dBASE, remember.prg:

Now, He finally exited the loop.

I didn't now Mr. Rettig, only of him, but the news of
his sudden death has saddened me none the less.
My condolences to his family, friends, and the entire
Clipper community for their very unfortunate lose.

We'll all miss you, Tom.

I used some of his UDF's: they were a great help. I never knew him, but I'm
truly sorry he's gone.

Even those of us who didn't know him personally will miss him and his
contributions.
The Toronto Star had a small bio on his passing, but true to the type of
investigative reporting we seem to get these days, they knew about Lassie,
and had a small list of personal problems, but they were apparently
completely unaware of his huge contributions to the software industry.

Is this the same Tom Rettig that produced the Advanced Extended
Version library for Clipper 5.0x and distributed as public domain
under TR4CL.EXE
The writeup for the public domain is as follows:
This software was the first third-party library developed for
Clipper, FoxBASE+, and dBASE III PLUS. In 1988, it won Data
Based Advisor magazine's award for "Best Dbase Add-on Library."
In 1990, it won DBMS magazine's "Readers' Choice Award" in the
Libraries category.
If so, this man was my mentor and I am greatly saddened by his loss.
Much of what he gave became a building block to my own success and
will be an integral part of my work for years to come. I wonder if he
realized the impact he played within the Clipper community was so far
reaching.

That would be the one.
