Older Clipper Program (5.0) with 10 users on Novell 4.11 Server is
giving DBFNTX1004 error on creation of files 30% of the time.

This problem just started happening in the past few weeks. There have
been no Code changes for at least 12 months so it must be environmental.

SO. The environmental changes that have occured include:
1) We recently mirrored our Novell Server.
2) A few months ago we upgraded to Novell 4.11 Server
3) Several employees have recieved faster PCs (P200) with OEM OSR2 WIN95

Has anyone heard of problems with Clipper 5.0 and any of the above?

There is a patch to Novel to fix a I/O thing. Symptoms include lost data
and records. I think Novel calls this a Btrieve problem but it effects all
xBase.

Make sure the new machines have the vredir patch from Microsoft.

From the manual:
DBFNTX/1004 Open error (creating .dbf)

Default Behavior:
Program continues without creating a database file (.dbf).

Explanation:
The specified database file (.dbf) could not be created.

Action:
Check to make sure that sufficient disk space and directory
entries are available. If the file exists, make sure it is
not marked read-only. In a network environment, make sure
the application has the necessary rights to create the file.

With the change of your network OS the rights could have been reset to
less comfortable settings. Did you check if the rights the app needs
are intact?

You mentioned that some employees received faster computers equipped
with Win95 OSR 2. Was the error introduced when with the introduction
of the new computers?

It even happens when I am logged on as administrator. I have checked the
security and it appears correct.

Typical (L)users did not bother to inform me until they had the problem
for several weeks and could not put a date on when it started happening.
Unfortunately we made a lot of changes around that time so it is
difficult to pinpoint which of the changes may have caused the problem.

I have recently noticed that it also happens on a machine that has not
changed for months so I suspect now that it is a problem on the server.
I an going to look for the patch mntioned in the other reply to the this
group. If anyone has a patch name/number I would appreciate it.

Whille you're looking I'd download r6003fix.zip from Oasis as well. Its got
a fix for timing loop conflicts between Clipper and fast chips (usually
5x86) which cause all sorts of problems - we've just experienced append lock
problems weher the server refuses to let the clients have append time...the
fix, fixed it.
