I like moving from Clipper to Delphi and still like to use
the DBF files and NTX or equivalent index files.
Could somebody tell me with tools are available for Delphi?
My I start with the simple version of Delphi?
Many thanks in advance for any help.

If you really want to work with tools that mimics Clipper's... then you
should have a look at Halcyon, Apollo or Advantage.
Maybe there are more options available but I know those few ones.
Apollo is like the now dead SixDriver for Clipper and is compatible with
Clipper tables ;
Halcyon works fine, with a few glitches and is compatible with Clipper
tables ;
Advantage is... well... Advantage !
You may open and work with DBF tables using plain Delphi via the Borland
Database Engine (BDE).

Apollo : www.vistasoftware.com
Advantage : http://www.advantagedatabase.com/ADS/default.htm

I habe selber das gleiche Problem mit meinen vielen Clipper-
Anwendungen.
Delphi) arbeiten will.
Adresse: www.vistasoftware.com
Delphi kann man auch herunterladen (150 Mb) in der Testversion.
Hat bei mir aber mit dem Code nicht geklappt.
Ich persönlich habe mit für VB6 entschieden.

Take a look at our Advantage Components for Delphi. It is free and allows
you to move to full client server.

Advantage does have full support for NTX . We provide this support through
our data dictionary. Please take a look at our latest and greatest version.
I wouldn't want you to give out false information :-).
As to the performance of Advantage compared to other engines, take a look
our benchmark test.
http://www.advantagedatabase.com/ADS/Product+Detail/Benchmarks/default.htm
You will find that our test application comes with full source code, all the
tables, doc's and everything else you need to run the test in our
environment. (you will need to contact each of the competing vendors to gain
access to their engines) This is unlike a couple unnamed vendors, who just
show you test results without providing you:... i.e. their application,
source code, tables, doc's.... showing how they came up with the results.
I question anytime a vendor provides you with benchmarks without supply the
proof behind the test.

Take a look at www.grifsolu.com for a BDE replacement. Works with DBFNTX and
DBFCDX.
Also http://kylecordes.com/bag/index.html for a comparison of BDE alternatives
for Delphi.
Some BDE alternatives are also useful in that they have some syntax closer to
Clipper than Delphi.

Witch Delphi level do you need to use Apollo library?
Is the Entry version good enough?

Many thanks for your quick answer. I do programming for fun (stand alone)
and writing small network application for very small company (2-5 users).
Advantage Database Server if for that in my opinion too expensive.
Best regards
In our tests - not rigorous at all - ADS proved to be far superior over
Apollo in most aspects, notabily speed and ease-of-use.

Hey Bill: 3 weeks ago I downloaded all ADS lastest versions but haven't got
my passwords yet! Perhaps some problems in your database system?...
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all! MN
For any DB work in Delphi you need at least the Pro version, if you go to
Borlands website you can see what you get in each level in the feature
matrix.

Here is a collection of tools:
ClipDelp
(http://www.the-oasis.net/files/general/clipdelp.zip) A dissertation
about converting from Clipper to Delphi as your programming tool. This
article tells about some of the pitfalls you will encounter and how to
handle them, and also provides some sample code between the two
languages.
Clipper Functions for Delphi (CFD)
- a commercial product, (http://www.adpsi.com)
Xbase functions for Delphi
(http://codecentral.borland.com/codecentral/ccweb.exe/listing?id=15646)
XFUNCS.PAS contains some common xbase (FoxPro, dbase, Clipper)
functions written in Delphi. This will assist the FoxPro, dBase, or
Clipper programmer in moving to Delphi.
Xphiles (http://www.prgtools.com/xphiles.htm)
- Xphiles is Xbase for Delphi, an Xbase-on-Delphi toolkit that
includes a run-time library of hundreds of Xbase functions and dozens
of Delphi components, including all major Xbase functionality and
CA-Clipper functions.
Delphi for Clipperheads
(http://delphi.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cyberus.ca%2F%7Edsarrazin%2FClipper.zip)
The ZIP file (four articles) is an introduction to Delphi 1 for
programmers coming in from a Clipper environment. The link was
provided from Beginners Delphi Corner

Then you are "stuck" with having to use the BDE, or if you don't need
to access the DBF/NTX files from other apps (Clipper, etc), then the
dbase files can easily be converted to Borland Interbase. There is an
open source version, so you can get (real) client/server for free.
[SNIP collection]
Wow. Nice list. I hadn't seen much of that. Off to do some reading...

There are non-BDE alternatives. See the "BDE Alternatives Guide" at
http://www.kylecordes.com/bag/index.html for some examples.
I use Halcyon for DBF access under Delphi (http://www.grifsolu.com). Very
affordable and comes with source code (thankfully, because the help file
kinda sucks!). No DLLs required. It was very easy to get up and running
with this. It does NTX, CDX, MDX, etc.
Another non-BDE DBF access option is CodeBase. It doesn't come with VCL
components (last time I checked) & uses DLLs. I don't have a URL handy.

You can also use Topaz and ADS local server. (free) to avoid the BDE <G>.
